Yes, they would argue, but they would be wrong. It was their resume that was lacking (in the context that there could only be two), not their starting position, that kept them out of the championship game. There is certainly some truth that starting position matters to a degree, but it is no where near what the mythology suggests.
Not really. If you go undefeated and you're from a major conference, it's actually more freaky not to make it like AU didn't.
If you are ranked 1st or 2nd it matters because if you don't lose you will be in the championship game - otherwise, it doesn't matter.
