The problem with this is self-delusion. As I said before, while they would be tempered by actual results people are not going to forget what they know about teams and that includes how current personel performed last year. Tell me what was so unreasonable about AU being ranked third at the time of the first BCS? Why do you think the first poll, if taken at that time, would have ranked AU higher? I know you think they should have been ranked higher and that is legitimate, but why is not doing so such an obvious travesty, and why it is obvious voters would have recognized it if not for the preseason poll?
The argument for the 9th, 10th, and 11th ranked team being deserving of a national championship would be much less valid in comparison to say a 3rd, 4th, and even 5th ranked team. A team is always gonna find something to "bitch" about, but a playoff system makes it much more likely that we crown the true and most deserving NC.
Personally I think doing the rankings one, two, or even three weeks into the season can only improve ranking accuracy. How can there be a valid argument otherwise? Watching a team perform on the field is a much better representaion of how they'll perform in that year than last years performance. It just makes much more sense. Preseason rankings are near blind predictions.
But you're ignoring the reality of that scenario. Just because the rankings aren't written down, doesn't mean they won't still be there in people's minds.
But their argument would be that they deserved a shot, where "media bias" took it away. At any rate... of course a playoff would make it more likely that we crown the most deserving NC because more of it is determined on the field. I don't think there's an argument to the contrary. However, the great thing about college football is the importance of each & every game due to the lack of a playoff.
Anything that improves "objectivity" at the expense of "subjectivity" , such as ranking a current team rather than a former team, gets a thumbs up in my book. :thumb:
The point that I believe you are missing is that when the poll actually starts after having the benefit of seeing some real games, the voters can at that time dedide their ranking and not follow the old " can't drop em down if they haven't loss yet" credo that many voters have. I doubt very seriously that many of the voters look at each team as in depth as you do, oyu should probably be in the Harris Poll.:hihi: Anyway, I've heard voters exclaim on numerous ocassions that they will not drop a team down unless they lose, so if they start them out high before there is really any substance to accurately rank the teams, then unless teams lose they will maintain or elevate in these voters rankings.
I guess you learn something everyday. All you have to do to convert a subjective poll into an objective poll is not to do a preseason poll. And since it would be an objective poll, I guess there wouldn't be any need for a playoff at anytime because we would objectively know who's best.
