I tend to agree. Shula had to deal with low numbers of scholarship athletes. Nick will be largely past that.

When the Bama fans started talking about Saban going to Bama, I thought they were delusional. Then Saban went to Bama.

What was wrong with my thinking? I am correct that being head coach of the Dolfins at 4.3 mil a year is a better job than the Bama job, especially if you want the challenge of the NFL and opportunity to win a Super Bowl.

So what else could it be? I thought Saban was a great coach and he would succeed at Miami. I was wrong. Saban failed in the NFL. He knew it, and many Miami fans thought it. Now if you've failed in the NFL, but its not painfully obvious to everyone else yet, get out quickly, then it won't be obvious. Especially if you can still land the biggest deal ever from a rich bunch, who thinks they are competing with your current employer and have to beat his deal, when they probably didn't.

That was my thought problem. I thought Saban succeeded here and would succeed at Miami, but he failed at Miami, which is why the Bama job looked like a better deal.

That's what I didn't realize until the last couple of days.

PS: It's funny we take advantage of a thread on "dropping the anti Saban stuff" to go anti Saban some more! I guess our spleens are just not cleaned out yet. But this is a complicated situation, because what the principals say is not true, so you have to think some more and dig around and try to find the truth for yourself. As we debate it, we add perspective and get closer to the truth.

Maybe Bama could have offered less and he still would have bolted?

this sounds just like the Game cock fans who announced the ole ball coach would turn them around in ten minutes.

And he's actually done a decent job to be fair. Will he ever create a dynasty at USCarolina? :nope:

will saban do that at Bama? :nope:

    same difference.

I certainly think so. He wanted out of Miami because he "peter principled" out. He rose to his level of incompetence. I think he knew it in his heart, but had to invent other excuses for leaving Miami before he was exposed after his third season. But you don't say that, because it would hurt his negotiating strength. So you use some other reasons, like now I realize I really love college ball and the opportunity to develop young men, and my wife misses the college town atmosphere. Now you have a stated reason to leave, without having to let on that you won't risk your reputation by staying for a third season (possibly 3rd straight loser), which would really tarnish your reputation.

So you really want out, but make Bama think you really have a choice here, and you work them for all you can get. Well, I can sit here and collect 4.3 mil a year (if I don't get fired) and surely you'll have to do better than that.

Now if you're Mal Moore, and haven't picked a winner in a long time, and you're desperate, you'll pay a proven winner at the college level whatever it takes, as long as you don't come out looking like a fool for firing Shula and then end up without a proven big time winner.

    A match made in heaven.

    I'm not angry, really!
Just pointing out that NS can get an allstar team of coaches at Alabama
and it will still be hard to be 10-2 and make it to a New Years bowl year
after year playing in the SEC.
He can get the best team possible but that doesn't ensure he will be that
much more successful than Auburn or LSU.
After all we lost to UAB, Ole Miss and 2 bowl games with Saban.
I'm not trying to knock him either, just pointing out we haven't done any of
this with Miles yet, we lost to Florida, Auburn and Tennessee.
Pretty darn good if you ask me!

Yes, I do think he will be successful but there will be bumps in the road.
Auburn, LSU, Florida and some hail marys on that Saban Defense.
That is why I like Pelini's defense, How many games have we blown
on a last minute hail mary under Miles and Pelini?

Louisiana might be in the south. Our state college is in the SEC... But YOU are delusional if you think the atmosphere and circumstances of our football programs are even close to the same. I seriously hope you don't expect Bama to rise like LSU did under Saban just because the coach has the same name. If so, you may end up hanging yourself in 4 years. You Gumps are in for an experience you least expect. Again, what goes on in Baton Rouge and the state of Louisiana football is completely different than what you have 2 doors down in the 21st century. "12 National Championships", say it over and over again, it will comfort you at night.
