Wasn't. Im not scared of snakes but almost stepping on that bastard was a bad feeling. My dog snuffed it out right before.

Didn't see any snakes, but yeah I have almost stepped on a few. I get my dog snake trained usually, she helps me stay away from them.

I did shoot a water moccasin during Teal season.

Given the choice, I would've hunted the shallow end. I'm surprised at what you're saying cause I've killed them over potholes in plowed rice fields and have found them to stay away from deep waters- at least those you mention.

We got more mud ducks, they got more big ducks and just about the same amount of mud ducks. I say deeper water, but not deep. Just enough for the decoys to float and have movement, while we had no movement on ours.

Anyway, the main issue was they were a bit more lucky as the ducks were working their spread, and not ours as much.

Yeah I was talking about scaups/lesser scaups, aka, "Black Jacks". The first blind I put in one of our rice fields I killed a heap of them but not much else. That's when I learned that they liked deep water. I had it flooded too deep. I'm like you, I like just enough water for decoys to float. Obviously with such a tight window we'd keep a cushion so ended up with a bit more than that.
