Before the hurricane, I saw an interview with Nagin. He said that in a wose case scenerio that the levees were breeched and the pumps failed, that they would then open up the levees in certain areas to drain the water naturally, and that would take 10 days to two weeks to happen.
I'm amazed they used sandbags for the levee break :dis: . I guess it's all they had. Any good engineer knows you need giant concrete brickbats to plug the gap first as sandbags bust and wash away without any real weight. There must be enough busted concrete around to drop into this gap. How about those wasted sections of I-10 bridge that are permanently damaged. This is terrible and will cost hundreds if not thousands of lives.
They were "SUPPOSE" to use 3,000 pound sandbags to stop it up, BUT the helicopters were used instead for the rescue effort. That is from the Nagins mouth.
Hey, Okie, my friend. Think about what you are saying. There is no alternate solution with natural drainage "IF" this levee break stays open. Think about it. It will keep pouring water into the "bowl" and keep N.O. the level of Lake Pontchartrain. That "sticky" had a cool map of the city that showed the high and low points. If the breach is repaired and there are still no pumps, what will happen is that the water will evaporate and go into an already saturated ground and drop eventually taking months to go down. Are you sure it won't rain in the next few weeks, adding to the problem. Creating another levee breach and draining off water very slowly at low points doesn't solve THE problem. Low points will still be getting "fresh tidal feed" from Pontchartrain. How did that one guy put it in his earlier post "The map of Louisiana & Lake Pontchartrain will be changed. No, the breach must be filled. The Lakeview side of the levee must be shored with heavy concrete rubble that cannot be washed out. If these locals can't figure it out, the military will get it done. The city has hundreds of those concrete barriers similar to what exists between lanes on I-10 near the dome. As a last resort, they can use those sections and drop them into the gap combined with sand. THIS WILL WORK.
Dont know if anyone is watching the webcast from wwl but I am. They just had an interview with one of the generals of the corp of engineers and he said that they are gonna try to block off the canal at the lake. They believe that the lake level is gonna drop within the next 24 to 36 hours at that point they will remove the blocked and create a revise effect. THEY HOPE
I think that is what I was trying to say Nagin said. But I am so tired and stressed at this point I am not sure what I am saying.
