i dont believe i ever encountered a bum that really wanted food. bums generally make enough begging that they have enough to eat. one time my bud bought a bum a burrito and the bum tried to return it to the store for cash. another time a bum asked me for food money and i had just left the convenience store and they had some crazy two for one and i ended up with more taquitos than i wanted. i offered him one but he didnt want it. one time there as a young fella in the subway saying he needed a dollar for fare. i said go away. he later got on the train and showed me a stack of money he said he had just made in the last 20 minutes. like 40 people gave him at least a dollar. he never needed fare money he just wanted a quick bunch of cash. hunger is not an actual problem is the US, and hasnt been for decades. the issue is mental health. and obesity.
what we as a species need to to do is advance to a point where we do not need to invent a reward/punishment fantasy to incentivize moral behavior. belief in an afterlife reward can motivate some pretty dangerous behavior. especially if your religion also stigmatizes normal sexual behavior and offers sexy virgins for fucking in the afterlife. young fellas tend to blow up alot of shit when they think they will get to pound virgin pussy as a reward. its probably best if we just ditched all the myths about afterlife nonsense.
I don’t know that they need to believe in God, but if they want a peaceful life, it sure helps to believe in Gods teachings. The teachings of Judaism and Christianity are templates for a peaceful, cooperative life. It goes like this. Don’t kill people, ... if you do, their family will seek revenge and kill your ass. Don’t steal people’s shit, if you do, they will seek revenge and kill your ass. Don’t be boinking another man’s wife, he will kill your ass. Don’t go spreading lies about your neighbor, it’ll piss them off and they will kill your ass. Take a day of rest every seven days, hey, life is stressful, and if you don’t take a day of rest, the stress will kill your ass. Jesus came along and added some stuff, ... like, hey, be nice and people will return the favor. Don’t be a selfish asshole and people will love you. Don’t be a pompous asshole, like these Pharashits and people will give you the respect you deserve. What you sow is what you will reap, if you sow shit, you’ll get shit, if you sow good things, you’ll reap good things. Basically, anything you do in service to your own ego will give you trouble. Just live a good righteous life, and things will go smooth.
Just my point! Religions are artifacts of man and his reach for God. The daily tenants and practices are more a reflection of the mores of the society than God’s direction.
