Battle at UA is one but with his experience at CLC and exposure to the collegiate 'industry' it didn't worry me. In my opinion, there's a strong management aspect to the position of AD. I don't know enough about Swann's experience to be critical or complimentary. Like I said earlier, it struck as odd. I doubt he'll do as badly as we're seeing with say ... Ray Tanner at UofSC.
Mullens....sound familiar GDF? He was a deputy AD but never the chief honcho until Eugene. And Swarbrick at ND.
How does anybody know exactly what al the duties of being an AD entail unless they have been close to a situation? Such as experience as an assistant AD or maybe a football or basketball coach either at the university where he is being hired or at another high profile program?
You have a point although I think there are some basic skill sets that all D1 AD's likely share or should have. In the case of USC, on an insider scale of 1-10, 10 being high, I'd say I'm about a 7.5. But I do know what is on the horizon for our athletic programs over the next 5 years and securing capital investment is key as is the Coliseum renovation. Since it's LA and we are always under scrutiny, our AD has to be comfortable and confident in front of local sports media. USC is the largest employer in the City of LA and there is constant work being done with the City Council. The AD also needs to be a public relations figure head, charity leader, respected in the community, well-respected by student athletes. Swann checks all the boxes. Is he an expert at hiring and firing or contract particulars? No and neither was Pat. I guess I'm hopeful that we don't need Swann to do what Pat did and that the entire athletic administration has learned something over the last few years.
Does Swann have any AD experience at all? When Mike Bellotti became the Ducks AD,.. well it wasn't a good fit and he was politely nudged out of the job. Being AD of a major university isn't like it was,.. where a retired Bo Schembechler can lean back in his chair and watch. The modern AD position pretty much requires a Master Degree in Economics,.. it is all about finance and budget now.
