Every year we'd be 7-0, play Bama and then be 7-1. Bama won the SEC and LSU was runner-up. In many years, we had NC quality talent but sometimes sh!t happens. That was really the big debate back then. You had fans like me and Stacey (and her Dad) arguiing that no one was going to come in and do a better job than Mac and firing a coach because Bama and the Bear consistently beat him would be stupid. Every SEC team would be looking. Finally, in an effort to appease the growing outcry, Cholly decided he would utilize the talents of his outstanding QB, Mike Miley and switch to the newfangled veer offense in an effort to counter Bear's unstoppable wishbone. All through the spring and fall, the new offense was installed then, with no warning, Miley took the major league baseball money and flew the coop leaving Mac with no QB to effectively run his new offense. I think they went 7-5 that year and the AD caved in to the pressure and let Mac go. Big mistake. We never sniffed another ranking until Arnsparger came in.
You might want to look at the "Contributor" under my name. I have been a paying member as long as they have been asking for donations. barner.
Very interesting about Miley, I guess that was 1979. The 70s was tough in the SEC unless you were Bama. We won the SEC every year except '70 & '76 I believe and it might be interesting to look at how many other programs had coaching changes because they couldn't seem to beat Bryant. Coach Bryant did make a statement once upon a time about teaching his assistants. I teach them everything I know except how to beat me.
Mac could not beat the bear and ole missy when they had a winning record. No one else could either. You also have to remember during the 60's & 70's when bama was a national power that you had very few tv games and the networks wanted a school with a big draw - Penn St in the NE, Notre Dame in the NW, USC in the west, Texas in SW and OU in the middle. Bryant could sign a 100 guys just to keep anyone else from getting them and no one cared because he was good for tv.
Sure is RE because my love for my school far exceeds football, unlike you. Did you ever attend or graduate form UA? Can you even find your way to tuscaloosa without a GPS?
