By "purposely distancing himself" from the hire Gauge sure seems to be covering his butt when Chizak poops out. Bayou, you're on target saying Finebum is no Bama shill, or even a Bama favorite. He's like a pit viper we respect because his venom is so strong. He can't be paid to take a position, but he can be manipulated occasionally. In the back & forth between Dye & Finebaum, Dye paid tribute to what a master of being nasty Finebaum is. He said that Finebaum coining the term "Plantation Mentality" in reference to Auburn absolutely distilled the general criticism of Auburn down to two devastating words, as only Finebaum can.
I remember like a decade ago he said something that bothered a large portion of black readers. Its pretty well known and I was not implying that is why Mastermind doesnt like him, just thinking out loud.
always read that guy's stuff as he is one who i agree with mostly yet makes me think a lot more than others. my feeling on the situation as soon as race surfaced was that its Auburns choice. if they dont feel gill was the right hire it could have been because of race or any other myriad of reasons. either way, I dont see the problem. but the onus is on them to make the right decision between losing recruits or money. meaning, if the nex down on the plains would have had a problem with an oreo marriage or simply a black coach, then that affects the program because those same nex are boosters. A choice has to be made to keep the cash coming in. Or even if its blatant racism keeping gill out, does anyone truly think he would have a chance of winning there if he was hired unwillingly by those same people? whether its poltical correctness or moral ineptness involved, it was a losing situation for gill (and anyone else) either way.
JMO, but I don't believe it was race or a mixed-race marriage issue. Auburn currently has two coaches on staff that are in mixed-race marriages, and honestly I've never even heard someone mention it being an issue until Finebaum raised it the past week. I also don't subscribe to the myth that African American coaches have an edge in recruiting because of their race and their ability to "relate" to the young, AA, athlete. If this were the case, then coaches like Ty Willingham would've been an overwhelming success at an institution like Notre dame, just as Croom would've been more successful during his tenure at Miss. State. It's all about relationships, and specifically, it's about relationships with HS coaches. Gill has extensive relationships throughout Nebraska and Texas, but his relationships in the southeast appear to be limited to the state of Florida. (Buffalo's roster has 5 players from FL, and one from Tennessee, none of them starters.) Gill is a good coach, and an even better human being, but he failed to make my short-list of viable candidates soley because of his lack of relationships in the SE. Had there been less pressure on the Plains, or had the AU administration telegraphed that they were willing to excercise more patience that they demonstrated with Tuberville, then I would've believed Gill could do it. But Gill would've easily taken at least a full year to begin making inroads in recruiting, whereas Chizik or Muschamp would've hit the ground running with an exisiting network of southeastern contacts.
