But the rule does have an exception for an uncatchable ball. You can mug a WR if the ball is clearly uncatchbale. I'm not going to look it up, but someone posted it in one of the threads.

Now, I don't think is was an uncatchable ball. But at the very least, it should have been defensive holding.

NO...you CANNOT have any contact with the receiver PRIOR to the ball being tipped. It doesn't say anything in the rule book about being uncatchable. Even if it would, the ball WAS catchable and probably would've gotten caught if the interference wouldn't have already been taken place. The tip really has no part in this situation any longer since the interference was taking place before the tip.

    Here's the rule:

    > *Illegal Contact and Pass Interference *
    >
    > *ARTICLE 8.*
    > a. During a down in which a legal forward pass crosses the neutral zone,
    > illegal contact by Team Aand Team B players is prohibited from the time
    > the ball is snapped until it is touched by any player or an official (A.R.
    > 7-3-8-II and III).
    >
    > c. Defensive pass interference is contact beyond the neutral zone by a
    > Team B player whose intent to impede an eligible opponent is obvious and
    > it could prevent the opponent the opportunity of receiving a catchable
    > forward pass.
    >
    > ARTICLE 9.
    >
    > b . Players of either team legally may interfere beyond the neutral zone
    > *_after_* the pass has been touched (A.R. 7-3-9-II).

...and here's the best view of interference taking place BEFORE the ball was tipped....this is pass interference. I don't care what the SEC says. It doesn't get any clearer than this...

Ok, sorry...I skipped over that article in my own post :) But still it doesn't make a difference. That ball was catchable prior to the tip and the interference was taking place when the ball was catchable. There's no way around it.

In my eyes, the only reason that ball is not catchable is b/c of blatant pass interference.....so if indeed it is not catchable, then the penalty is illegal contact. No matter what, there was a penalty. I just don't understand why or how anyone wants to dispute that. It's not like it'll change the outcome of the game.....but it will hopefully lessen the chances of another call like that in the future.

You are correct. The problem is that one official saw the tip and decided the ball was uncatchable. He was wrong but there's not a damn thing anyone can do about a blown judgement call.

In that case, is this a reviewable play on the field? Could or should the refs have reviewed it?

No, nothing can be done about it now, but maybe something can be done for it to not happen in the future...to ANY team. It sucks to matter who you are to have calls blown so ridiculous...especially in a game that has so much at stake.

Nope. Not a reviewable play. That's what's so frustrating. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and recite the "Serenity Prayer".
