Exactly. I think that LSU didn't do the best job handling the situation, but Pokey's quitting (and threatening lawsuits) didn't make it easy for the administration. It sounds like they were blindsided, and maybe gave in to the lawsuit threat a little to hastily. But I honestly don't know if there was a better way to handle it. I just can't believe Chatman was dumb enough to think the truth wouldn't come out...it makes her look worse, IMO, to force the issue on that initial statement then have the real reason come to light.
It seems to me she jumped the gun on LSU. She must understand the rules involving confidentiality, mustn't she?????
I am sure she understands that, but she is just probably trying to have some control over how the information gets out. That's my guess.
A couple of thoughts here... One, I can't see the Administration giving in quickly. Now, law in Louisiana may be different than it is in Alabama, I don't know. Red mentioned earlier today that this compares with the Mike Price situation. In that case, Price tried to sue the University but his case was dismissed because of the way the law is worded. In a nutshell, it pretty well eliminates state employees from suing a state run organization. Granted, the situations are different, one being fired and the other resigning, but it doesn't change my thought process of that being a "long row to hoe" for Pokey. Blindsided? Now that seems "spot on." According to the ESPN article earlier today the asst. didn't report this to the Ath. Dept., but to other University officials. That raises flags to me. I asked about whether the asst. coach (now interim coach) might have an agenda. Red responded promptly that this wasn't the case. Is that the same thought with this asst.? Last, but not least, University relations, no matter the University, are usually handled privately. Calling the AD out in this situation is stretching, IMO. People say it could have been handled better...but, how? It's not something the SID would handle. The President, I could see. However, considering Bertman wasn't the one that had this situation brought to his attn, but, this asst. literally went over his head...sure looks like he was caught between a rock and a hard place.
More news just broke out about the timeline of the incident. Pokey has not been around any players without supervision since mid-February. This is when Pokey's assistant and former teammate, Carla Berry, reported her to university officials. It has been stated again that the incident did not involve current players. Link
This thought crosses my mind also, RE: law suit threats. Homesexuality isn't a protected class, is it? (IE: religion, nationality, etc.)
short term thinking. because when all hell broke loose because the school "covered it up" the program would have been damaged in the long run. what parents would have sent their daughters to play at lsu with a sex scandal cover up? as much as i have admired pokey, she is the one that used poor judgement. that is not the fault of the school or the players. yes, those guys are right. given the delicate nature of the entire mess, confidentiality, etc., there is no way the school could have handled it that would have made anyone happy.
