I am now projecting Georgia to hold on to 10th spot in the BCS. The computer polls did not favor Kansas State nearly as much as I thought they would. Georgia eeks out 10th spot, which is cool that they stayed in the top 10. This is projecting LSU #2 in both NYTimes and Billingsley. I am still holding out hope that NYTimes gives LSU #1 and OU #2. In this case, OU = 5.11 and LSU = 5.77 Wow USC had to finish #1 in NYTimes poll in order to get 2.67 rating and finish with a 6.15 rating. LSU and OU threw this poll out. That means it came down to the Billingsley poll. LSU finished 2nd...curious to see the final spread. Had USC finished 2nd in that poll, LSU would have been dead in the water.....wow!
I was reminiscing over that frantic last Saturday of the college football season in 2003. That Billingsley computer poll decided whether OU was going to play LSU or USC for the national championship. And it was a tenth of a point difference or 1/33rd of 1% difference in the score.
What I'm remembering about that year is that because of the AP, everyone had USC as a shoo-in for the title game. But the reality was that in every factor that was part of the equation, LSU was the only team that was in the top 2 for everyone. The debate that should have been taking place was whether OU or USC would play LSU.
As I recall, Southern Miss was the home team. And it was a game rescheduled to that last weekend because a hurricane had forced postponement of the game as originally scheduled. The second appearance was due to West Virginia being upset in the last game when it was a heavy favorite.
Yeah the game finished somewhere around 2:30 in the morning. The Syracuse upset of Notre Dame got the ball rolling early in the day, setting up the most epic finish in BCS final rankings history.
