When your team is the 16th most penalized team in the nation (out of 117 Div. 1A schools), that tells me that he's not real big on the details right there. It's got nothing to do with a laid-back attitude...although a little bit of fire on the sidelines might stoke up the player's intensity somewhat. When Saban was stalking the west sideline, if you goofed up on the field, you were deathly afraid to go back in the direction of the bench.
I am tired of this argument. what exactly did Saban build? I believe in his last year he lost three games, including the bowl game against Iowa in the last second while his precious defense was on the field. He won games the same way Miles did this year...by the skin of his teeth for the most part. not only that, but he got his ass handed to him at UGA last year....I was there and watched the whole damn thing in disgust. yea, Saban recruited great high school talent and got great recruiting class rankings the last 2-3 years he was here, but if it amounts to nothing on the field it is only as good as the paper it is written on. I think Saban saw he would be unable to repeat what he was able to do in 2003, even with the talent he had on paper.......and the struggles of the 2004 season made the jump to the NFL all that much easier. I say Saban would be in the same position today as Miles, or even worse not having made the SECCCG. Enough of the Saban excuses and BS...it no longer holds water
Pretty valid one if you ask me. Let's see, he helped build some of the best facilities in the country b/c of his influence as well as a model academic center. We won our first new years bowl game in 30 years, 2 SEC Titles and 1 National Title. He did more in 5 years, than McClendon did during his entire tenure. He left the keys to Ferrari, and once Miles is finished he will have left us with a pacer. The program was on the an elite status when saban left. I can't say we are an elite status under miles. They are not excuses, they are facts.
then where was all that last year??????? did we even go to the SECCG game with your beloved Nick Saban? off field accomplishments are great. I think Nick was a great coach, but he did not acheive last year with arguably better talent then Miles this year. We had the same offensive meltdowns last year under Saban, and the same blown coverage in big games. Defend that.
This year can be summed up as nothing more than.... ****ty offensive line play. Watch Brian Johnson and Nate Livings whiff after whiff... Rudy Niswanger hold on a touchdown pass and get flagged 15 yards, Andrew Whitworth getting called for holding on 2nd and 10... ****ing inexcusable from a group with as much experience as they have. THey have failed to either open holes for RBs or protect the passer all year.
I was comparing his career not just last year. The reason why Saban was debating about staying was b/c he knew what he had coming back this year. With that money, he should of ran, but he did not want someone just to reap tthe benefits of his hard work.
And I'm tired of people trying to downplay what Saban accomplished here at LSU. You can't measure his success with just wins and losses, although that was pretty damn impressive. Look around campus at all those athletic facilities. Fans don't donate unless they have faith in their football coach. Winning 10 games is one helluva accomplishment for any coach. But I think many LSU fans have some concerns about what we saw this year and what will happen in the years to come. Only time will tell...
so...we are comparing Saban's 5 years with Miles not even one. well, record wise Miles has the lead after 1 season vs Saban. Miles beat Bama, Auburn, and Florida in the same season...something Saban did not do in 5 years. Miles got to the SECCCG in his first year...Saban did not do that. and as for recruiting, appears Miles has the 4th best class right now according to Rivals.....I beleive that is on par with Saban during his 5 years. http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?SID=880 apples and oranges at this time my friend......
I am not downplaying Nick's off field accomplishments at LSU. Nick will be one of the greatest coaches ever to have been at LSU....but did any of us think that after year 1 with him. He also brought our university up to par with other by getting those things done. I feel Mark E. played a big role in that as well, and that O'Keafe will not be as supprotive of athletic endeavors.
At least he could talk and someone would understand, including his own team. At least he rallied his teams at halftime and didn't depend on Coach Williams to get his team to play. At least there were not near as many penalities including personal fouls. At least the rest of the nation regarded him as one of the top coaches in the country, not just TF members. And on and on, people are not nearly as disturbed by the record, as they are by the man.
