LITTLE ROCK — Former Arkansas star Corliss Williamson is to be announced as the new coach at Central Arkansas.
Williamson is leaving his job as coach at Arkansas Baptist, a junior college in Little Rock, to take over at Division I Central Arkansas, according to Charles Ripley, the athletic director at Arkansas Baptist. Central Arkansas would not confirm the hiring but did call a news conference Friday to introduce its new coach.
Ripley says Arkansas Baptist is “excited” for Williamson and that he expects the former Arkansas Razorback to “do very well” at Central Arkansas.
Williamson had said last year it was his dream to coach basketball at the Division I level.
Williamson takes over in Conway just three years removed from playing in the NBA and just days after the conclusion of his third year at Arkansas Baptist College, a junior college in Little Rock. Williamson was head coach of the Buffaloes after taking over for Athletic Director Charles Ripley last season.
Williamson played for the Razorbacks for three seasons, from 1993-1995, and was named Most Outstanding Player of the 1994 NCAA Tournament after leading the Razorbacks to the national championship. During that time he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, was 1st Team All-SEC, and was named SEC Player of the Year and 2nd Team All-American twice.
