Well, to them, marriage is a pretty big deal - so it's hard to say "other than marriage" because that's a very important right that is being denied to them.
Then it's not about sexual preference. Currently, two same-sex heterosexuals are not allowed to marry just like two same-sex homosexuals. I'd call that equal treatment...
Now I finally see your point. Except it's not true. It is about sexual preference. Marriage is about love - to be married, you swear to love them etc etc & if you love another man, then you are a homosexual, & it is about sexual preference...
I'm definitely going to have to disagree with you here, as I think that the changes wouldn't have been able to occur to the great extent they have without the government. Slavery was a cultural movement... in a lot of places, but not the South. Without the civil war, that never would have changed. Throught the government, the constitution granted both african americans & women constitutional rights that they never had before, like voting, & that nobody but the government could give them. I also feel that without the government's acknoledgment of their equality, they wouldn't be treated as fairly as they are now ("fairly" is a lose definition here).
I hope most people marry for love, but that marriage license affords you certain legal rights. And while it's been 20+ years since I got a marriage license (I have since burned that license  ), I don't believe love was a requirement to get it. If same-sex marriages are allowed, I can see a day when same-sex couples (regardless of sexual preference) marry only to enjoy the legal rights and financial benefits of traditional married couples. Some say so what, but I believe those legal rights were given to promote the family unit, which is important in our society. IMO, those legal rights would slowly be taken away since everyone would have them and the value of the family unit would diminish. JMHO...
Did you not have to atleast lie & profess love to get it? You can't stop people from lying... Maybe there shouldn't be legal rights enjoyed because of marriage... I dunno, but if heterosexuals get it, then I think homosexuals should as well. I'm of the opinion that you can still have a family unit with two women or two men as parents. It's not a traditional family unit, but I think it's better than nothing.
