Red, reading that is so puzzling to me, coming from someone who's most ofen 1 + 1 = 2. I'm having a hard time following the logic there. First of all, a stew is much thicker than a gumbo and served more like a gravy over rice (At least that's the only way I've seen it served). A gumbo is served more like a soup; however, I have seen (One time) it eaten like a gravy. I would think most would agree (We're about to find out, lol) gumbo is roux, water. The seasonings and type of meat classify it but how can a chicken/sausage gumbo not be called gumbo without okra? I'm really trying to understand cause this is the first time I've not understood your logic on ANY post. Let use this logic to show you how it looks to me: Sausage is sausage but it can be pork, deer, jalapeno. The presence of jalapenos doesn't constitute whether or not it's sausage. Make me a believer.
I will cook my okra separately and then add it to my bowl of gumbo. I like the okra, but not the slime. If the okra is too slimy it can ruin the entire pot.
I know Okie...can you believe the nerve of some!!! The poor Bama fans thread is now about what we like or dislike in our Gumbo!!! But to continue...I owuld have thought you would be an okra girl! I like okra in everything which is why my Mom put okra in almost everything...I guess it really is up tot the person!!!
Heeey Okie!! We're finally in agreement on one. Wait a minute.......he started the gumbo thingy. He's going to end up banning us from the LSU forum and we'll have to go post on the Bama one.:hihi: I love it! Like when someone says, "I hated to bother you while you were busy, but.......... (Then they bother you). :hihi:
I haven't cooked okra in a long time but think if you add a lil vinegar and cook it long enough it won't be slimy. :thumb:
Gumbo can be thick or thin, depending on the cook. You can call it gumbo, and many do, but you could call it Ralph, too. For example, Campbells has a canned soup called chicken gumbo. Try it and tell me if it actually is gumbo. I think not. To quote from Wikipedia. Technically gumbo is an okra stew and the seafood or the chicken and sausage are complimentary ingredients. I've had many a tasty dish called gumbo, but without okra, and I ate every last drop. You should eat the gumbo my relatives in Alabama make. No roux, no okra, no sausage, no cayenne, and no file. But it's chicken gumbo to them. To me it's chicken soup. NOW . . . I know some folks don't care for okra because they think its slimy. Well, there is no rule that says just how much okra makes it a gumbo. I like a lot of it, but you could just put in just a little for flavor and authenticity and I would pronounce it gumbo.
Be dam!! Good answer, you were basing it on 1 + 1 =2. I had no idea and shoulda known you had some basis for saying that- thought it was out of character for you- not seeming "Logical". Take it as a compliment though. :thumb:
add some egg plant in with the okra in your gumbo! mmmmm ...is it cold yet? can't eat gumbo unless it's cold out.
