East St. John High School football coach Larry Dauterive said he doesn’t think former LSU coach Nick Saban will have success recruiting players in Louisiana for the University of Alabama. Other prep coaches disagreed.

“I don’t think he can get a player from Louisiana,” Dauterive said Wednesday, hours after Saban told the Miami Dolphins he accepted Alabama’s offer. “He got Louisiana kids when he was coaching in Louisiana, but I think Les Miles is a way better recruiter than him.

“Maybe Nick can capture the state of Alabama like that, but he’s not going to come back in here in Louisiana and get a kid. I don’t think. Not with what LSU’s doing now.”

[Dauterive said it will be interesting to see Saban try to recruit within the state of Alabama.

“In Louisiana he was maybe competing with Tulane,” Dauterive said. “In Alabama he’s got to fight Auburn. It’s going to be a little different.”

Coaches and scouts often credited Saban with “building a fence around the state” when he was in Louisiana. Now that he’s on the outside looking in, Dauterive suggested, he might find that fence working against him.

“There’ll be some kids that maybe still have an infatuation that would go, but to get the top-notch guys? I don’t think he’ll ever get those out of Louisiana,” Dauterive said.
