I see lee throwing many more timing routes next game in order to work on chemistry with his receivers. We know the d will shut down nortwestern. Next game should be used work out the passing game kinks.
Fully agree. Lee was solid...i'm not sure what the peanut gallery wanted...perfection, Drew Brees,...although, even Drew misses a throw or two... I prefer Lee to JJ. The value added by his passing attach outweighs JJ's running value. I think in the end it makes us a better team, where receivers run better routes and play harder, running backs run harder, coaches call better plays and produce better offensive schemes... And most important, i prefer watching games with more air time...
Yup. Our passing game still needs work, both QB and WRs. Lee is still not comfortable in the pocket. Won't be able to dominate the line and run in the SEC without a better passing attack. But... I think we're better off with Lee than JJ, and probably Mettenberger. With JJ we take carries away from the RBs and have much less of a threat to pass the ball, especially in the mind of our OC who will default to running the QB if that's available.
I agree with the consensus that the WR have most room for improvement, which shouldn't come as much surprise because they are the most inexperienced unit, and Randle seemed hobbled. Take away 3 of 6 drops and one phantom hold and Lee is a very respectable 14-23 for 160+, and the offense would have been in more of a rythm with those drive extending receptions and Lee would have had more confidence. Lee will improve and he needs to, the sack he took dancing around in the pocket and two "floated" short passes and a ball thrown two yards behind an open Petterson were the bad Lee. With some improvement from Lee this could be a storybook season for him and this team.
On the drops, unfortunately at LSU that is the name of our game over the last 4 years. I have said each year and we have averaged close to 4 drops a game over that span. It started before Gonzales got here and he hasn't been able to correct it. Don't get me wrong, I love our WRs and wouldn't trade our unit for any other but I just hate drive killing drops and it hasn't helped with our QBs gain confidence. We have been very fortunate to overcome the drops and most of the time get Ws but I worry it will finally catch up to us at the worst moment possible. For those who want to see every pass from Lee last night look below. Izzy isn't far off with the grade and even Lee stated that he was disappointed with the miscues. The good news is that he showed he can struggle and bounce back gradually through the game. He played within himself and knows he has to get more comfortable in the pocket and throw some of the passes earlier in the routes which would have likely negated at least 2 of those drops. I feel confident with Lee for the time being. Nice way to start the season. The key will be how he does when he doesn't have a short field in the SEC. If we have short fields like we did last night in the SEC then our defense might be the best we have ever seen. They are nasty. MSU will be a perfect test for Lee in this regard. Either way he is leaving that game knowing exactly where he is and where he needs to be. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n_RzmvtH84]00000.m2ts - YouTube[/ame]
That's my fear at this point. And boy what an opportunity wasted if he does. I wish to see no less than 40 pass attempts next week with Mett getting in valuable snaps and at least 10 attempts himself. We know we can run. Would not see the point of rushing for 350 yards next week against a feeble opponent.
Shout out to bhelm for the video. One thing I didn't get to mention was when Lee threw too late on the pattern, he was getting his receivers belted. Not good. They don't appreciate that. That pass to Clement was actually accurate but late and he got hit hard and it jarred the ball loose. A second earlier and Clement probably catches it cleanly and runs over the safety.
Miles won't throw much once a lead is established. That's just the way it is so no one should expect differently.
I said the same thing right after I saw the replay of the pass. The DB was playing deep and he didn't make a sharp enough cut. I realize it was a post, and not a crossing route, but just a little sharper cut and he is open. Instead he ran right back into the DB because all the DB had to do was drift over, since his hips were already turned that way. Now if that is how the coaches want the route run, for fear of the safety getting over from the inside, I don't know, but the skinny post looked a little too skinny. If so, we need to get Lee to look off the safety and run a "fatter" post.
