Key word right there. Check the number of SO's and you may pull him for someone who makes more consistient contact with the ball. Say maybe a Tony Gwen or Rod Carew. They won't go big fly but they won't break their bat over their knee because they whiffed on an 0-2 curve ball that bounced 3 feet in front of the plate either.
Not accounting for defense at all -- just the best offensive player at each position, and no real "batting order": C- Piazza 1B - Pujols 2B - Joe Morgan SS - Arod 3B - Mike Schmidt OF - Willie Mays OF - Ted Williams OF - Barry Bonds DH - Babe Ruth This team would score about 25 RPG
most of these power hitters took lots of walks and got on base as well. like bonds is a power hitter but it on base more than anyone. he is more of a table-setter than anyone else. i figure you should just take the all time OPS+ leaders and make a lineup that way, i think it would score the most runs. it would be all power hitters i think.
these are the ops (not OPS+) leaders. a good a list as any other. Babe Ruth 1.164 (.16364) 1 Ted Williams 1.115 (.11550) 2 Lou Gehrig 1.080 (.07977) 3 Barry Bonds 1.051 (.05118) 4 Albert Pujols 1.049 (.04887) 5 Jimmie Foxx 1.038 (.03757) 6 Hank Greenberg 1.017 (.01686) 7 Rogers Hornsby 1.010 (.01027) 8 Manny Ramirez 1.004 (.00436) 9
this discussion reminds me that the 2004 season for barry bonds was the greatest offensive season any of us will ever see. and anecdotally, i remember how goddamn dangerous he was. if you pitched to him, he would hit a home run. that was it. he simply would hit a home run if you gave him just one pitch. he didnt miss. else he would walk. it was incredible. with roids, he is no doubt the greatest player that ever lived. single season best offesive performances ever: 1. Barry Bonds, 1.4217 (2004) 2. Babe Ruth, 1.3818 (1920) 3. Barry Bonds, 1.3807 (2002) 4. Barry Bonds, 1.3785 (2001) 5. Babe Ruth, 1.3586 (1921) 6. Babe Ruth, 1.3089 (1923) 7. Ted Williams, 1.2875 (1941) 8. Barry Bonds, 1.2778 (2003) 9. Babe Ruth, 1.2582 (1927) 10. Ted Williams, 1.2566 (1957)
In an all time greatest hitter line up there is no way anybody could pitch around him. Juiced or not, he pounded the sh!t out of the horsehide
