I think it'll be hard for Miles to start anyone other than Russell if Russell is healthy, in large part because that will signal decided change. Granted that Russell is healthy, I think Russell gets the start almost solely because he is so physically gifted. I do think he will have a shorter leash because of Flynn's performance, but even if I were coach it would be hard to not start Russell. Of course, starting Flynn against ULL and seeing how he responds would be interesting, and then throw Russell in at the start of the second half to see how he responds to not starting. I think not starting Russell would definitely get his attention. If I were coach I would definitely RUTS against ULL; you really need to try to find the team's identity before facing Arizona. I wonder... people say it is impossible to simulate game speed, but I wonder if there is any way to judge some intangibles to see if there really is a difference in the way Flynn and Russell lead the team and how quickly each thinks on his feet.
You may not be able to exactly duplicate game situations but i can tell you while i was at Northeast and John David Crow and Pat Collins was our Coach we had some pretty exciting practices in the spring and 2 a days. #1 Offense against #1 defense and in some ways it was tougher than a game because you had all the Coach's chewing you out with every play. And when you are fighting for a starting job every play counts.
I'm clueless? In 2 years, JR has lost, what, 3 games, yet you are ready to slide Flynn into the role after one game? You are twisted. This has nothing to do with which QB I personally prefer. This has to do with what should be obvious to even the most casual observer. Flynn's Peach Bowl performance was not nearly enough to supplant JR. Take that to the bank, my naive friend.
Fellers, I think that no matter who starts we are going to play multiple quarterbacks this year. There is no reason not to take advantage of this depth because you can't redshirt them and one or more will be gone next year. I think Russell will start, if healthy. Then I think one or both of the others will see the field. Probably the way Richt got in a lot of playing time for Shockley so that he actually played like a senior when he started his senior year. LSU managed two quarterbacks succcessfully with Woodley and Ensminger and it has been done elsewhere. Season-ending injuries are real in the tough SEC. We need all of these quarterbacks to get into the game so that we can't be knocked out of contention if the starting QB goes down. I'd like to see the backup QB get one drive in each half, every game and the reserve QB get one drive per game whever possible. Give the starter a break and keep the other quarterbacks minds in the game.
Regardless of the situation? Miles said this past year that we have a starting QB, and we want him to play in as many situations as possible. He rarely got Flynn in the game. But that was when JaMarcus had never been a full time starter before, so things might be different now. He also might almost be forced into playing them in order to keep them here. I hope Miles reconsiders his position that he doesn't put backups in until we lead by 35 or whatever the ridiculously high number was.
Not only are you clueless but you can't read. I never said Flynn should start and in fact said JR is the front runner for the job next year at this point. Get a clue and get some glasses too!
It depends on who the backups are. You must expect the reserves to come in and lose . . . I don't. Most teams are lucky to have one SEC-caliber quarterback. They play him all of the time and when he goes down they are sunk. I think we must take advantage of this rare opportunity of being three-deep in SEC-caliber quarterbacks and do something audacious. Not in all circumstances, but forcing the issue, not being being fearful of it. Play the starter 80% of the time but rotate in the other guys just like every other position on the team. How many times did we lead the other team by 35 points last year. Once? The only thing better than three talented quarterbacks is three experienced, talented quarterbacks.
What? I said I hope he re-evaluates his position - meaning I hope he puts them in sooner. I agree with you, that our backups are capable of winning the game & thus should come in the game sooner. edit: Now that I think about it, I think Miles' policy only applied to select positions such as QB & RB, because he certainly didn't do that with the whole team.
You said: What I'm saying is that Flynn and RP are competing for the backup spot. That's just the way it is.
