What is it with you and this whole 'expert' thing? Seriously? This is a pretty obvious thing that happened over and over and over at every home game this year. If you think that's me proclaiming myself as an 'expert,' then perhaps we just have two very different interpretations on what that word means. But it was definitely easier to see at the game. Replays generally focus on the action of the play, not the reciever on the other side of the field with no DB w/in 20 feet of him. I'm not basing my opinion on one observation. All the things that JR did all year long that drove me nuts and damn near lost us games, Flynn seemed to have completely mastered in his first start. Flynn will never have JR's size or arm strength. But as has been pointed out, those are far from the two only deciding factors in what makes a good QB. Um, yeah. That would be a fact, and therefore, hardly disagreeable.
Really. I thought weren't allowed to make any assessments on Flynn's ability because of one game, SF???
You keep contradicting yourself over and over, one sec you say that JR could have done just as good in the peach bowl, then you say that lsu couldnt have done as good throughout the season with Matt Flynn instead of JR. with bad recievers and so on. The FACT of it is they are both very capable of doing GREAT things for LSU. Great doesn't always mean go down in history. Matt Mauck will not be remember 10 years from now. BUT HE GOT US TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
one of the biggest fallacies is people claiming they know if a qb looks through his progression of wide receivers and/or locks onto them. unless you can see the quarterback's eyes directly we really have no way of knowing for sure. of course, you can see the general area a qb is looking by his helmet but many times 2 or 3 are in the same field of vision. Also, when a qb is facing pressure and is forced to roll out, his vision is usually limited to that side of the field. do i think JR locks onto receivers and not make his progressions as often as he should? its likely but hard to determine when he had no protection more often than times he did. When a qb doesnt expect good protection, his tendency will be to not look downfield. What we can assess more accurately is flynn reading the defense and calling out correct blocking responsibilities to the offensive line. This can be assessed because a couple of linemen have said so publically but not because we know by watching and guessing.
Correction Matt Mauck will be remembered 10 years from now, aas bringing a team that hasn't been to the National Championship in a long time. With or without a surrounding cast. The QB makes the throws, the QB hands the ball off and play fakes! It's what the QB does on offense that wins games. You can have the best running back in football on your team, but if your QB can't keep the DB's outta the box, it's over!
Guilbeau is a complete idiot ... run out on a rail ... where's he working now? LOL. After 1 page of reading this horse-**** post ... I quit reading ... I'll say this ... JR will have as much wood in his ass in 2006 as Pinocchio if he doesn't radically change his habits, learn to relax in the pocket and see what's in front of him and start producing. Three years in LSU's system and what do we have to show for it ... with the best WR corps talent in America JR has: 1. Stats & QB rating ... Decent for Soph. Should be much, much better. 2. 10-million dollar arm ... worthy of all the pro hype :thumb: 3. Playbook Smarts ... doesn't "own" his own playbook after 3 years :dis: 4. Field Vision ... overlook open receivers & "telegraph" CBs :dis: 5. Finesse ... Can't relax, poor touch ... still learning technique :dis: 6. Leadership ... Passing marks here mostly The starting QB for the Auburn game will hopefully be the one who earns it with better passing ability against the first two cupcakes. But with the LSU coaching staff (Curly, Larry & Moe) you never know. Everyone knew Flynn had better vision and grasp of the playbook in 2004 & 2005, but the coaches went with JR anyway, HOPING he'd develop quickly. JR has the ability to improve & the intelligence. JR will improve on above listed deficiencies at LSU over the next two years, but at what cost to the W-L column & any Championship hopes. IMO, JR has a starting job to win back! Flynn's vision, finesse and ability to both run and toast secondaries with a successful vertical passing game (albeit one game) has put him in position to take the starter spot. He plays offseason ball & the first two games in 2006 like he did against Miami, and it's Flynn starting against Auburn. I just can't stomach another season of piss-poor offensive stats with 20-something scoring per game and a lousy total average yardage stat. 40 PPG & 500 YPG Offense or BUST ... I'm in on Flynn
Whatever that has to do with anything..... You constantly scoff at others for making a positive opinion after only one game (well, 1.5 if you count N. Tx.), but somehow it's ok for you to make a negative opinion after that same game because you think others presented their opinions in a more strident fashion? Try again, bud...
I hope this was a joke post. Guilbeau knows nothing about football. I remember talking to him before the national championship season about how I was excited that we would have a healthy Mauck back and he told me that Mauck would never start over Marcus Randall. To quote Guilbeau as an authority on football is truly stupid. Because a newspaper hired him as a journalist does not mean he knows any more about football than anyone on this site. And another thing...The jury is still out on the quarterback, but I would guess that Flynn should have the inside track. He manages the offense better, throws a more catchable pass, and runs better. I like Russell. He has a great arm, but I would rather have Flynn quarterbacking my team. At least based on what I have seen in the games. And before people say you can't tell by looking at the games. That is what scouts look at and they do a pretty good job of analyzing talent.
I think this is the first post that I've ever read of yours that wasn't a link to your site. Good job!
