Nice retort, Twisted. The shaking heads were an especially effective refutation of my points. You should join debate club if you are still in school. I must suppose that you have no answer to my mystification at your flawed logic, then. Yet, I am the confused one, as you so eloquently stated? TE and SabanFan (in particular) at least speak from a logical perspective, but others seem to let emotion cloud their thoughts. I cannot even tell if some believe the essentially thoughtless responses they hammer out that resemble nothing more than a programmed credo. And by thoughtless, I mean unsupported assertions and innuendo tempered with little or no logic, not that you are hurting anyone's feelings. I pray that some of you have the divine opportunity to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes one day, and perhaps gain enlightenment and empathy as you do so. Salaam aleikum & happy Chanukah, X-mas, Solstice, Kwanza, et cetera. (Oh, btw - the 'X' in 'X-mas' is a Greek chi, the symbol for Christ. But I've used more space explaining that so no one would take offence, when I could have just spelled it out. Oh, well.)
This was going to be my .02 cents on the subject, but since Martin already stated it I will just quote him on it. This is so prevelent in journalism, most recently on ESPN with the douchebag Gene Wojciechowski (he does a column with Ivan Maisel). This guy went on and on about Willingham and it totally embodied the "I should get a good person award cause I am sooooo not racist" style that many journalists seem to have these days. It is easier to be this way than have a backbone I suppose.
You can preach or condemn all the emotionally cloudy, illogical thoughts and perspectives you like, but the BCA, Naacp, Bet, Naawp or the White Players Assoc. or any organization that is based primarily on race, for the advancement of that race only, should be equally reprehensible to us all. As for your leveling the playing field, discrimination is discrimination regardless who the perpetrators are.
Wow, a thread that just went on for 5 pages gets perfectly summed up in 2 sentences. Great post rickyd! :thumb:
everyone take a moment and read TE's first post. it was excellent. Then SF had to stir the pot and TE lost focus and quickly reverted back to form. damn it TE I thought you were over the hump. good job TE but know when to say when. as far as the bca, yawn. What makes anyone think just because there's x amount of y color players, there should be z amount of coaches? when did this thinking enter anyone's head as relevant?
I had assumed you were black until I noticed that you misspelled Kwaanza  . Seriously, you make a good point. In another thread, someone pointed out that Spurrier does not recruit black quarterbacks. What's up with the sterotyping? Spurrier does not recruit running QB's but, if a Steve McNair or a Donovan McNabb showed up, I'm sure he'd be glad to have him.
Just to answer a few criticisms thrown my way: To quote myself: I am not for any quotas or other forcible attempts to "correct" the ratio between black players and coaches. (That's not the BCA's position, though, is it?) I just think older (and usually whiter) coaches are inexplicably re-treaded repeatedly at the expense of younger assistants of both races with great potential. I can see where some would see that as a problem. I actually do not agree with the BCA's boycott; I find it extreme. I just believe they’ve the right to exist and take any stand they wish. Some here have questioned even the legitimacy of their existence. Last time I checked, we lived in a free country. :usaflagwa As a Libertarian, I believe everyone here has the right to express any opinion, but that means the BCA has that right, too. They can boycott until the cows come home if they wish; they are not some government-funded group or empowered to force anyone to do anything. They should enjoy the same rights as the Boy Scouts, the Southern Baptist Association, and (shudder) even the NAAWP. To rickyd: Sorry, but the NAACP is nowhere as bad as Duke's NAAWP, as you suggested. Without the strong leadership Marshall and the NAACP provided in the '50s, segregation could have lasted well into recent years, (see Apartheid in South Africa). Have they outlived their usefulness? Perhaps. But Duke's organisation is no more than a lame attempt to legitimise his repellent, racist views. To martin: I did not call anyone here a racist, and clarified when someone thought that. Also, anyone who has read my posts knows I am definitely not looking for "good person" points. I say whatever I think, and the last time I ever worried about another's opinion was 16 years ago (ahh, junior high). Sorry for the long post, but, once again, it appears that some here do not read prior posts or think clearly before posting criticisms. Just had to respond.
doc torgo, i havent read all of this thread, all i am disagreeing with you about is this: all i am saying is that organization whose mere existence is so stupid as the bca doesnt deserve a callback. you know what they are gonna say, and why would you care to hear it? what part do they have in your decision-making process? none. they are idiots. when you choose a coach you care about merit, and merit only. why listen to an organization founded on the idea that it somehow matters what race a coach is? not only does that not help advance the cause of equality, it hurts it. by the way i am honored that a person with a 163 iq might be reading this.
I do believe you insinuated that some of us here are racist, and as for criticising that some don't read prior posts or think clearly, please show me where I ever compared the naacp to the naawp. Had you comprehended what you read, you would have realized that my point was that neither should exist for the sole purpose of furthering the cause of a single race. You are right, the last time I looked we do live in a free country, one that is not supposed to allow discrimination of any kind, from any race. I believe you will find that most of the animosity comes from people constantly playing the "race card", or implying that everything has racial overtones, instead of focusing on who is best qualified for the job. Then there are the organizations such as the BCA, BET, Naacp, The Black Actors awards, the Miss Black America Pageant, The Democratic Black Caucus etc. whose sole purpose is to further the cause of one race, but thats not "racist" right? Please. If it would not be acceptable to put the word "white" in place of "black" in the name of any or all of these organizations, then why is it we tolerate reverse discrimination? Like I said earlier, discrimination is discrimination regardless of who is doing it.
