I gathered as much, that he was the "very reliable guy I've known for years" you had referred to. :thumb:

Yeah, I doubt Nick would allow this to happen. Jim Bates and Nick Saban have complete opposite views of defensive philosophies. Saban runs a much more aggressive defense, which includes a variety of disguised blitzes. The Miami Dolphins have yet to run a blitz under Jim Bates (exageration, but they do rarely blitz). Saban would want a lot of control over the defense like he has at LSU, I don't think Bates would want to relinquish that to Saban.

    ...

Doesn't sound like the total control Saban was wanting.

Like I said, take it for what its worth. Doesn't sound like a decision has been made yet, if this info is correct.

Glad I'm not the only one to pick up on this (I also agree that this sounds more "comprehensive" than the other rumors we're hearing). Consider: Jim Bates, a guy he respects but hasn't coached with in over 10 years, is going to tell Nick who he should retain on the defensive staff (far and away the positions nearest and dearest to Nick).

    Uh, no.

Also, what's this about Art Shell as a team executive? That smells, I don't buy it.

If there's a kernel of truth in this, it may be that Miami is using the heavy speculation that Nick is out of the door in Baton Rouge to push back and get Nick to give on some other points.

If so, that begs the question: why should Nick Saban, who is a near lock to be a dominant college coach for the forseeable future, settle?

Consider: if the Bears were the first semi-serious suitor (not counting the Jags, for one) that Nick has had since he's been at LSU, a lesson the Dolphins took from that is Nick wants total control.

So, the Dolphins appear to be saying "whereas the Bears offered you little personnel control, we'll give you more...but not all."

If that's not Nick's cup of tea, he should say, "No thanks, I'll just keep winning 10 games a year, collecting my $2 mil, and wait."

I name a successful black NFL coach, so you get sarcastic and name a SWAC coach... you have something against a black coach at LSU or something?
