P.S. Just think, LSU could have had Thomas, he was committed and ready to go to LSU, until he saw he was listed as a "Athlete" recruit. He decommitted and went to Oregon when we promised him he would play QB. Imagine how good LSU would have been last year, with last years absurdly good defense, and a QB with 35 touchdowns!
while i would have loved to see him as a tiger, you can't just translate his actual numbers into a hypothetical scenario like that. without getting into the sec dominance crap, it's a different situation and atmosphere here so who knows what he might have done at LSU. i surely don't think he could run like he does at UO.
OU playing UConn in a BCS game was a big joke; it was akin to if the Sooners had been playing a high school team.
Thomas does not pass nearly as well as Lee, and probably not as well as JJ. He is only a so so runner, with ok speed, and one shimmy move. He got the starting job over Costa last year, even though Costa both runs and passes better, because he makes good decisions. Not every time, but over all, he makes it happen. Example comparison: Lee was forced to play in his true freshmen year, did terrible as one would expect of a true freshmen. Did you know Thomas had to play his true freshmen year? He started out 5th on the depth chart, but 2 QB's were injured before the season started. In the game against Boise State, two more QB's were injured, and they had to blow Thomas's redshirt and stick him in the game. He got in late in the game, with the Ducks trailing by 24. He rallied the team, threw 3 fourth quarter touchdowns, but still lost, as there was not enough time to come back from 24. (He redshirted the following year.) Yes, he has bad games, everybody does. He had a bad game last year vs Cal, and a bad game vs Auburn. (Consider his expected excellence when 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and 390 yards is considered "bad".) But overall he is sensational, and LSU has had a long stretch since they had a QB they could say had overall sensational play. P.S. Don't go playing the SEC card, yes, the SEC is better than the PAC 12, but the difference is not so big that somebody with 30-9 touchdown/interception ratio would not do very well in the SEC. In the Tennessee game last year, Thomas orchestrated the most lop sided loss at Neeland stadium EVER! Yes, last year's Tennessee team was mediocre, but nobody else in the SEC put up those points in Neeland against them. And Oregon had to do it after traveling 3 time zones, which is no small disadvantage.
i didn't play the sec card, if you reread my post i declined to delve into the sec dominance 'crap' because i think it's puffed up and regurgitated by people that don't really know football. yes, it is my opinion that darron thomas would not be as prolific in the sec because it is different, and particularly brutal on quarterbacks. all i said is that you can't just plug in numbers, different system, different coaching, different conference. please quit playing the tennessee card. playing one mediocre at best sec team doesn't mean as much as you ducks would like us to think. it just doesn't. PS- darron thomas is a damn good quarterback. you guys are blessed to have him.
They should change it from most outstanding player to most valuable player, which is pretty much how they decide it nowadays. Best player on a team that is in the national championship game is always the winner.
Nice to recall the memory of Thomas leading the charge against Boise St. That was exciting, at one point Thomas had gotten us into position where, if the defense could of held, we might of had a real shot. Didn't win, but DT looked great. Didn't see the field again that year, redshirted the next, started last year. About the SEC card,... caution, highly volatile subject, proceed at own risk. Visiting Duck fans have been received very graciously by these great LSU fans. I'm very proud of my fellow Oregon fans as well, but if you want to get in an argument,.... compare our conferences. Other than that, I say these LSU Tiger fans, need the full broadside, fire all guns, and please don't hold back. Do remind them often, of how badly the Ducks are going to clobber their Tigers on Saturday. I can't hear about that enough....
