It isn't just the wind either.

A huge oak tree fell on a house near Lafayette last year. Not from the wind--the ground was so saturated with water that the tree was just floating and lost balance.

I don't think Blacksburg is taht close to the coast--it's more like where people from the coast will go to be safe. If that's the case, just do a little tailgating.
