Not true. Some are not bad at all . . . usually the voluntary ones in old neighborhoods. The bad ones are the legally binding ones in new developments.
i think they can be pretty valuable in a place like lake charles that has almost no city code restrictions.
Then you sir, are well within your rights. If you didn't sign and agree to the terms, you're not bound by them. Apparently the homeowner in this case did. BTW, how did you manage to close on your houses without signing HOA documentation? Where I live it is a condition of buying the home, it's not optional. Were you the original owner of these homes or bought from a previous owner? We built our home new, maybe the requirement only applies to the original buyer?
I don't know. I wasn't the original owner on any of them. The first one was bought from people we didn't know, the second was a duplex I bought from my father in law and the one we are in now was a foreclosure. I guess it depends on where you live, I really don't know. I know the realtor said something about HOA for the current home and I told her to put it in the trash I didn't want any part of it. Hell I've got some Clark Griswald Christmas light action going on right now. I wonder if that is against the rules? The basketball goal however is still at the duplex that we sold because I still refuse to move it  **Edit, going get the goal tonight, I'm going to put lights on it at the new place just to see how far I can push my luck**
