If LSU faced a Hail Mary situation, Mathieu would be on the field, on offense or defense. Nobody has his instincts, ability and the desire to make a big play, period!
You know this is very possible. I have rarely seen any trickery from Miles this year compared to previous years. We could do it just to throw the defense into confusion even if the play wasn't about him.
LSU and Les Miles would have to start the heisman PR campaign very early for a defensive player to have a shot. We all know how many defensive players have actually WON the award, no matter how great of a season they've had.
Just line him up in the slot, throw the ball over the middle to Clement, when the defense starts piling up players trying to tackle him, have Mathieu run in strip Clement, recover and take it to the house.
Its like the old Kordell Stewart commercial. Bill Cowher: "Kordell... Get in there and punt!" While there is little doubt that TM7 would be an asset on offense, the fact that he will only be in for certain plays allows a defense to key on him. He would do very well on screen passes, especially quick screens, which rely on a receiver to make a quick move and get up field. I would not object to him lining up at WR mostly as a decoy, but there is no reason he cannot be throw one or two passes on a read... If he is the outside man and the CB is playing 12 yards off, sure, turn and pop it to TM and let him work.
I'm pretty sure TM7's "Heisman campaign" was started by his selection as a finalist this year. The "campaign" isn't really needed near as much when you go to NY the previous year.
