How could someone want Butch Davis at LSU? (Long)

You put together in one post all the reasons that I've been against the guy. He's just a slimeball, and I think we can do better. I want someone that will care as much about the development of young men as they do about the W-L record. Nick Saban may not have been the easiest guy to work for, and many people thought he was a real a-hole. But not only was he a great coach, but he really changed the atmosphere around LSU with regard to academics. The Academic Center for Athletes is a bigger recruiting tool than many people realize, and we have Nick Saban to thank for that. He wanted his players to be high character people and act with class on and off the field. And his players did that for the most part. I want a coach who will continue that.

And I don't think Butch Davis is the person we're looking for.

Lou Holtz and Pete Carroll were "chewed up and spit out" by the NFL, yet they came back to college football to win national titles.

Steve Spurrier was also "chewed up and spit out" by the NFL, but schools would line around the block to hire him.

    Think about it.

Butch Davis may have had some rocking times in the past. But as far as a NAME coach, that can go out and bring in top 5 recuiting classes, year in and year out, he is the man. Iread where he has a 11 yr old son, maybe he is ready to settle down at a place and raise his boy. He may have done some bad things along the way to get to the NFL,but now he can relax and finsh out at LSU. Look I am the first person that thinks you sould give a person a second chance. I think skips needs to go all out to get Davis. Oh by the way we dont need to worry about him going back to the NFL again. I say lets get Davis!!

    Newsflash:

    Coaches lie to the media.

Also, coaches manipulate people during hiring situations.

Finally, pro players look out for themselves almost exclusively. The Browns underperformed and screwed Davis. If they were any good now that the "monkey is off their backs," they wouldn't look like pure garbage now that he is gone. They are just bitter losers.

    It means nothing.

I still think Jeff Tedford, one of the hottest college coaches in the country, is ripe for the picking. This guy can flat out coach and has a fire in his belly (the opposite of an emotional burnout). Cal is not committed to football like LSU and I think LSU could persuade him with the right sell. Davis may have been considered the best at one time, but now he has too much baggage. He may be able to pick up where he left off in college but we don't know. I say go for those who are the best in college now.

"Considered one of the brightest young minds in college football, Tedford inherited a 1-10 team and has directed the Bears to a stunning turnaround that includes the school's first back-to-back winning seasons in 12 years and first postseason bowl berth since 1996.

Under his tutelage, such quarterbacks as Trent Dilfer, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, David Carr and Kyle Boller have blossomed into high first-round NFL draft picks. In his first season at Cal, he transformed Boller into perhaps the most improved quarterback in college football. The trend continued last fall, as Aaron Rodgers sported the second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio (19 TDs/5 INTs) and third-best passing efficiency rating (146.6) among Cal's all-time single season leaders. In addition, backup Reggie Robertson (154.2) and Rodgers ranked second and third, respectively, among Pac-10 quarterbacks in passing efficiency last year.

A proponent of a balanced attack, Tedford also has been involved in developing running backs that have produced 1,000-yard seasons six times in the past six years at Cal and Oregon. The most recent to hit the milestone have been the Bears' Adimchinobe Echemandu (1,195 in 2003) and Joe Igber (1,130 in 2002).

"I believe Jeff's one of the finest minds in all of football," said (Trent) Dilfer, now with the Seattle Seahawks. "He's certainly the finest coach I've ever been around. He's a great leader and great teacher. He has very high expectations for himself and the people around him. And he will work tirelessly to meet those expectations. Jeff taught me more about toughness and the game of football as any coach I've ever played for, and I've had some awfully good coaches. To this day, I still consult him on all major issues that I'm facing in football."

Imagine what he could do with Russell, Flynn, and/or Perriloux.

I think the most imporant point to be made is that Miami did just fine after Davis left them (at least until they bought into the Brock Berlin hype).

I think the new LSU coach should be either Butch Davis or Jeff Tetford. I like both a lot. I was really set on Butch Davis, but now I'm starting to like Tetford more and more each day. Putting it into simple terms, if a guy can win at Cal-Berkley with all the pot smoking, leftists, academicians who loathe athletes and football in particular, then I think he should be able to win at LSU. But anyone with football knowledge will tell you that you can't win the race without the horses to run it - and a coach has got to continue to fill the LSU stable with superior athletes and Butch Davis who was a great recruiter at Miami, even in Louisiana, should be able to do that. So my short list is one of these two men.

Maybe you should "think about" reading an entire post instead of quoting a fragment of a sentence and responding to it.

Because he was chewed up and spit out by the NFL is not the only reason I said that I didn't want Butch Davis.

    Think about that.

there is more coaches available than just Davis

I will admit that I have been leaning to Davis, but after spending some time this weekend, I do not know that he is the best candidate for the job. There are a ton of coaches out there that may want the job and I do not think that this will be as easy as we think it will be. I want to see a thorough interview process that includes college coaches like Tedford, Davis (designated college b/c he isn't going back to NFL), Miles, Leach, and maybe a Petrino (but I think he is at home right now). As for some NFL coaches, I want to see Robiskie interviewed and while they are not head coaches I think that they should look at some NFL assistants. I have heard Del Rio's name mentioned, but why would he leave a good job with a successful Jacksonville program to coach college. Another NFL coach who I have not heard mentioned would be John Gruden. While not on the hot seat, he is having a time of it at Tampa Bay and may want to get out the NFL before he becomes tainted like a Butch Davis.
