I remember it well. Your student activity fee was not much use after football season - until Pete showed up. Back then the freshman played before the varsity. People were hanging off the rafters in the Palace to watch Pete play in the first game but the place would empty out for the varsity. He was one heck of a player and one heck of a human being. As a sidenote, someone once told me there is only one alternative to getting old -dying. I am glad to be old!!!!
dont put them in the same sentence! geert turned out to be a great college player. im serious, i think he was close to a 20/10 guy his senior year (ok, maybe 15/8).
pettit was from BR. he'd be the next one id add to the list of three i originally posted (although he should be #2 or #1b in all reality)
What in the world could your point be? Ancient history is still history. Bob Pettit was the best player of his era and at 6-9, one of the biggest. He took LSU to the 1953 Final Four. He was the all-time leading scorer in the NBA upon his retirement in the 60's (20,880 points). Pettit was Rookie of the Year (1955), NBA MVP (1956 and 1959), 10-time All-NBA First Team (1955-64), he's a Hall of Famer (1970), and one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996). There were plenty of black players in the NBA in Pettit's era including other centers like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Maravich and Shaq are the only LSU basketball players who can be mentioned in the same breath with Bob Pettit.
I saw Johnny Unitas play in Tulane Stadium. Crewcut, black hightops and all. Body parts are falling off as I type this.
George: "HEY! JIMMY!!! ha ha ha........Great game." Jimmy: "OH yeah.......Jimmy played pretty good." George: "Hey you know , I felt we had like a synergy out there, you know, like we were really helping each other." Kramer: "What d'you got there?" Jimmy: "These?" Kramer: "Yeah" Jimmy: "These are Jimmy's training shoes." George: "Yeah, yeah yeah yeah! I've seen these.....they sorta ..they make your legs..stronger." Jimmy: "Oh yeah! Jimmy couldn't jump at all before he got these. Jimmy was like you (looks at G.) Kramer: "They're Plyometric.(sp?)" George: "Plyometric?" Kramer: "Yeah! They isolate the muscles. The muscle has to grow....or die." George: (to Jimmy) Wh...Where d'you get'em?" Jimmy: "Jimmy sells'em." George: "You sell them?" Jimmy: "Oh yeah! But Jimmy's all out right now. Moving to Manhattan set Jimmy back a bit." George: "Hey listen ,let me give you my card. It's got my home number on it. I want to buy the first pair when the next shipment comes in." Jimmy: "All right" George: "All right Jimmy Good talking to ya." Jimmy: "Jimmy'll see you around."
