I think with a QB he has more confidence in Les would open it up some, but he will never be the fun and gun. If Lee and Mett keep improving there will be more passes called. But the jury is still out on both of them even though they have played fairly well so far.
The final stats .... first half, Lee .. 9/10, 133 yrds. second half, Mett .. 8/11, 115 or so yards. I"d say those ratios are pretty fricken close ... 10 attempts in the first, 11 attempts in the second. Les Miles is old school .. he's going to run the ball if he can. Sure, he may have wanted Mett to get a little throw experience in a live situation ... but even if Mett is the starter .. I think you will see a 65/35% game .. run/pass.
I think a 60/40 split is exactly what Miles wants. Also anyone could skewer stats by saying stuff like "if you look at the first 3 drives", here I'll prove my point. If you look at the last 3 drives of the 1st half here's the split, 3 rushes to 7 passes. That's a 30/70 split. WHOA! LSU must be hiding their RB's. I'm really worried Ware and Ford aren't as good as we thought with a game split like that. When you look at the entire 2 quarters that ZM played the split was 27 rushes to 11 throws. That's a 71/29 split. Now the normal response will be that Miles didn't want to run up the score. So he ran the ball. But TBH Miles was doing that all game, run the ball first. Two factors came into why Lee threw 10 times. 1) His ankle. I think Lee might have normally played a series or two in the 3rd quarter but with a tweaked ankle Miles took him out early. 2) Short fields. LSU on a good number of JLee drives started already deep into NWST territory. Short field gives you less of a chance to throw deep balls and I think Miles was content to pound the ball and not risk injuries. There's also a reason why when ZM first came in he was throwing the ball more. Miles wanted to get him reps. Period. The offensive game plan didn't change when ZM came in. We still pounded the ball a ton. Just like play calling didn't change that much. Miles just wanted ZM to get real game experience and not just the handing the ball off type, so he let him throw for a series or two, and then was content to pound. the. ball. If Miles didn't have confidence in Lee he would have never brought Lee in last season to win us games. Like it or not we're a run first team guys. Miles is going to put the least amount of pressure on our QB's as possible as long as he can. I mean it's only been 3 weeks since Lee went from bench warmer to starter.
Amen Brother .... Even if Mett is indeed better than Lee ... it still doesn't require Lee to be bad. Issy says he hopes he's wrong ... I hope he is proven wrong. I hope we win the NC this year, and I'd like to see Lee win it for his sake ... and I hope Mett comes out next year smokin' .... and we win it again. Hell .. I hope we get so spoiled to winning the NC that they just go ahead and rank us #1 every year .. like they do OU, who doesn't deserve it. :geaux:
Lee's 10 passes were spread out through the entire first half. 9 of Mett's 11 came in the third quarter, the 10th was on the first play of the 4th quarter. He threw one pass in the final 14:50 of the game. Not really as balanced as just saying 10 in the first half, 11 in the second. But we may very well go conservative if ZM has to play in a key game before the outcome is in hand, say, this Thursday night. We won't know until it happens.
It was also a short week until State on Thursday. Lee needed to heal that ankle and Les wanted all his starters to have fresh legs.
I think around 60/40 is what Miles would like also and that's a good number. Lee came into those games because JJ couldn't throw a rock into the ocean. In most cases Lee got the job done and looked decent doing it. However I wouldn't equate that into Miles having huge confidence in him. He has looked extremely shaky most of his career. He looks to be on track to big improvement and may earn that confidence, but the jury is still out. I hope he just continues to make small positive progress with each game. That's really all LSU needs him to do.
That's not true. 7 of Lee's 10 passes came on the last 3 drives of the first half and 8 of his 10 passes came in the 2nd quarter. Oh but that's right, you need to try and perpetuate this myth that once ZM came in they started to throw more than run.
It really all goes back to what Red said earlier ... Lee doesn't have to be bad for Mettenberger to be good. My dissappointment is in how some are bashing Lee as if he has no business even being on the field. It's the same people who were saying last year that he needed to go to a junior college or something. It's as if some of you are just waiting for him to make a mistake. .. so you can say .. "see .. we told you so . .Lee sucks". Well I'll pp the ESPN guys .... If you take away the ints of 2008, Lee was quite an accomplished QB. AND .. being as those ints were "mental" mistakes, and we are 4 years down the road, IMO, a little confidence in the fellow is in order. Only time will tell ... hell this week, he may completely fall apart .. but, I'm not feelin' it. I think he'll lead the tigers to another victory .... large enough in margin that Mett will again get to get in some snaps. But I still say, even with Mett as starter .. we will be 65/35 run/pass.:geaux:
Sorry I phrased that sentence wrong. I didn't mean to equate that to Miles having complete confidence in Lee, but more that Miles believed Lee can make throws. That seems to be the discussion right now. That Lee has somehow regressed in being able to pass the ball and that ZM is our only hope at a passing QB. Lee has to be nervous as heck to be back as the starting QB again for LSU. TBH I think that's why he's taken the sack instead of throwing the ball away. He'd rather be sacked than risk an INT.
