in 1986 getting to the final four from an 11 seed. even though using ole miss & alabama logic of championships we have a national championship in basketball in 1935, it just doesnt feel like we have a real basketball national championship. it seems like the only basketball championship we have is being the greatest cinderella ever.
That would be like a Boston Red Sox or Chicago Cubs fans feeling good about winning the world series. It happened so long ago, its meaningless now. Same way with LSU basketball. In my eyes, LSU hasn't won one in the modern era, so the one in '35 is not very substantial.
That '86 team is still the lowest seed to ever reach the Final Four... ...and the way they got there was magical... ...I talked long distance with my brother the entire 2nd half of the Ga tech game getting updated... I can still remember that just like it was yesterday... BTW Don Redden is buried next to Pete at Resthaven in BR... ...another life ended way too soon...
I know what some of you are saying about our basketball programs and winnng championships but we have a lot to be proud of. We've had some of the finest college and pro impact players here at LSU, Only Houston and North Carolina are up there with us with these kind of impact players. Not any of their players impacted the game quite the way Pete did though and you probably could say the same for CJ impacting the college scene as a freshman so I guess you could include him also. Also think of the records that will NEVER be broken. LSU, North Carolina and Houston are the only 3 colleges with 3 players in the NBA top 50. LSU= Bob Pettit, Pete and Shaq Houston=Clyde Drexler, Elvin Hayes and Hakeem North Carolina= MJ, Billy C and James Worthy I would say thats pretty good company for a football school like LSU, matter of fact I don't consider us just a football school anymore. Ohio State has 2 players and everone else has only 1 player Jerry Lucas and John Havlochek are the players from Ohio State "I agree with you BayareaTiger but I still think we have a lot to be proud of"
Those other programs had great TEAMS... We have had great PLAYERS but rarely have we had great teams. That's the major difference between us and the others there with us...
Jackson is the player who was acclaimed to popularize the cross-over dribble. I can still hear vitale talking about it and them showing the move over and over again.
