Scrappy, It was classy not to retaliate on spark. Back to the subject of this thread...... I am 29, so Hawthorne is the only voice of the Tigers I know. Many others my age dog him when he makes a mistake. But I think he's one of the best, truly the VOICE of the Tigers. And one thing he has to do is endure what we can turn off or leave. I left the UGA game early this past fb season but he has to sit there and give every excruciating detail. Same thing with the men and bball against UAB. I could turn off the tv and he has to keep doing his job. Yeah he gets paid to do it, but I got alot of respect for him. I don't know him but I hear nothing but good things about him personally so it seems like he's a good guy, so I'm glad to hear good things being said about him on this thread. It's not always that way. Geaux Jim!
Scrapster nice job on the air today. I esp. like when you called that poor bastard at the end sparky. HAHAHA He is now branded for life. I am glad to see you are giving my comment about your overly casual attire on remotes some thought. Don't be a radio slob, we have buddy for that already.
Spark, My man how do you see me at remotes? If you do, why dont you come and say hello man? I'd love to meet you. Your certainly the man. Again, thanks for listening. EVERY listener is appreciated. Lets take it to No.1
Bait, It's called total sports radio. It's on 1210am every day 11-12. I'm on there with Blake Andrews.
Scrap, you're showing your relative lack of experience in this market...The most famous Hawthorne Baseball "ism" is the nefarious "Hawthorne Homer"...Due to the long covering and the poor design of Alex Box, he can't see well hit balls all the time, and it makes for hilarious radio... I brought this up the other night, & it seems I'm not alone in recognizing this guffaw as classic Jim Hawthorne... An example: HEY, THAT'S WELL HIT, IT'S WAY BACK THERE...and the 2nd baseman circles under it gets to it in short right field for the pop out, #2 here in the 7th inning...Want better service, better water, better call, The Abita Man!
TE, You think I havent heard an infamous Hawthorne Homer. LOL I've heard plenty. I know about those. I was just noting that it was funny that he was like "good god" after a bunt. I've heard a lot of them. I also know, by word of mouth and personal experience, that JH is really not good at giving the score. That is aggrevating.
We have met and shook hands 3 times scrapster. I introduced myself each time. It suprises me you don't remember meeting folks at your remotes esp. when you meet them several times. Of course I use my street name not my birth name of sparkafatty. It's up to you to finger out who I am. See ya soon. Hey heres a great contest idea.... Why not have a scooby/scrappy impression contest. Callers can call in and give their best scooby impression. You can give your scrappy impression, have a little banter with the caller and the winner gets to put on the feedbag at the golden and maybe get a little hj from the supposed hottie who works there that you guys all love so much. hell I know you and pops play scooby and scrappy around the house all the time. It would make great radio.......
fundamentally who cares? with all due respect it's radio sports commentary not the state of the union adress. I dont remember the guy's name but the cubs radio announcer was once quoted in a big game as saying OH MY GOD HE DROPPED THE BALL! I DONT BELIEVE IT HE DROPPED THE BALL! in the most dejected voice ever during a big game when a cubs left fielder dropped the ball. THAT is the stuff we remember. im glad JH is a proud tiger supporter and wouldnt have it any other way. He doesnt sugar coat things he gives it to you how it is. As a tiger fan he helps convey the feel of the game. I've always thought he did a great job with that. listening on the radio, its hard to know whats going on but in games like troy state when the games werent televised, he did a great job of showing the frustration the team was going through. JIM HAWTHORN IS AS MUCH A PART OF LSU SPORTS AS SHAQ, WARREN MORRIS, AND PISTOL PETE!!!!!
I was lucky enough to attend the 1989 regionals in College Station, or the Aggie Open as they were calling it. When LSU wasn't playing, Jim joined in "lobby hangin' " and commenting all that Texas a$m was and wasn't. He bends over backwards as not tip his hand hand exactly how pro-LSU he is. Folks fawn over Eli Gold, but Hawthorne and Jack Cristil are my favorites to call a game.
