I can give you one word of advice, don't do it! I've been in the AF for over 15 years and there is not a day I regret not finishing school at NLU. Sure, it sounds like a good idea when you're young but as you get older you will miss all the experiences that the military will rob from you. Sure, you may get to see lots of places and go to different countries but it doesn't take the place of missed time with your best friends. Also, this is not a good time to join the military depending on your political leanings. But, if you have to join, the AF is the best service, obviously I am biased! The AF has changed so much over the 15 years I have served which makes me regret my decision more sometimes. Good luck to you, but think about this decision very carefully.

Listen to me, Andrew. Talk to your recruiter. Get the Air Force to pay for your remaining college education and in return, you commit to 6 years as an officer. It will make a huge difference in your future pursuits whether you make the USAF a career or not.

As an American, I thank you for your upcoming service. It's people like you who make this country great. I hope you eventually finish your college education, though...even if it IS at Ole Miss...LOL

    from a navy vet.....

My advice would be to think very carefully, but as stated in this thread, you can continue your education while sevring, just make sure you motivate yourself into doing it. Serving in the military can be the best or worst experience in your life...it is what you make it. I don't recommend it for everyone, but I can tell you that I have never regretted it. :usaflagwa

Weigh your decision very carefully. Theres more than cuss words being fired at American soldiers today. Viet era vets were not highly respected. Some things are very bitter to me even today. However, the Army was great to me. Helped me mature, gave me a chance to see things I never thought I would see, paid for my degree, helped me buy my first house, and even helped me get my job. I spent three years working in Gen. Westmoreland's office when he was chief of staff. I was sent by courrier with driver in a military car to the White House at times. I watched the Senators and the Red Skins play in person. Spent many many hours at the Smithsonian. Totally amazing place. Quickly advanced in rank beyond my expectations. Often regretted getting out. E-7 in a little over three years. But I chose to leave at three and left as a Speck-5. Just use all of the wisdom you have to make the decision. It is very honorable (although you will hear many criticise after enlistment..I think they feel duty bound or something) But with today's circumstances, it's deadly serious. I have a grandson who is a high school sr this yr. He is under delayed enlistment now. Marine Corp this summer. My prayers are with both of you. I hope both of you make the right decision for yourselves. :usaflagwa

Even though us Army guys think that AF basic is like a day camp. Welcome to the fold. Just do it for the right reason I see so many guys that joined the Army just to pay for college and that is all they care about they don't care about the brotherhood or the jobs that they need to do. Its hard to trust a guy in the field when all he has been doing is going to classes and not training.

Congrats on the choice and if you get sent out here to Gray give me a shout I'll show the wonderful town that is Killeen and the many places you can get certain things.

I retired in 1986 and working for a Gov't contractor on AF contracts since then, I've seen first hand the changes that have taken place. I don't know if I could do 20 in today's AF.

It looks like we should do a veterans' roll call thread. I never would have imagined so many were here. :usaflagwa
