See, your problem is that you stop reading too soon...noting the very next sentence... Winning the whole thing ain't the only alternative to just getting there. Did I really need to point this out? I don't think so. Stop picking out one statement from an entire post and avoid these future mistakes.
It's both. You don't have to win it all to be competitive. If LSU had gone 2-2 in Omaha and come home with a 4th place finish, no one should be upset with that. But going 0-2 in 2 consecutive seasons is horrendous. And we shouldn't be satisfied with getting to the big show and laying an egg twice. LSU baseball should be in the running for the NC just about every year, and to show you belong with the cream of the crop, you need to atleast be competitve in Omaha, and Smoke's teams never were.
I just enjoy aggravating you. To jrltiger: Winning CWS games should not be the basis for measuring a programs' success. If a team gets to the CWS on a consistent basis, they are a top program. Hot pitchers, slumping hitters, luck of the draw all play a part in CWS success. Get there enough and you will eventually win. I do think LSU needs a shot of adrenaline here and hopefully a new coaching staff will provide that.
I agree that you shouldn't simply look at how many games a team has won in Omaha over the past 5 years or so and say that's how successful the program has been. But, I do believe that once you get to Omaha, it should not be unrealistic for the fans to expect the team to be competitive. That may be 1 win, that may getting to and/or winning the championship series. And you're right, luck plays a huge part in tournament style play, but IMO it just seemed like when Smoke's teams got to Omaha they looked intimidated and scared, something I have never seen and hope I never see again in an LSU baseball squad.
See, Mike. The bus from Oxford to Omaha NEVER departs. We have our own station, here. Join the empire!
I actually feel bad for the pitcher that got waxed in that inning. But, it's Ole Miss. I HAD to laugh. On the other hand, I'm happy to see UGA advance. But personally, I want the Beavers to take the whole thing. I've pulled for them everytime I've seen them play in any sport since our football game against them. I can't help it, their fans were cool as hell!
