The problem with the hard core USL fan's is that they define a USL fan as someone who cannot also pull for LSU. Thus, I find it extremely difficult to support them even though I have many friends who have gone to school there. A "member's only" kind of thing !
That's the main problem I have with ULL fans. Even though I went to school there and will always support them, I'm an LSU fan first. That's been in my family since back in the '30's. The one that amazes me the most is the notion that if you live in Lafayette, you have to root for ULL because it's their home town. If you don't, you should move to Baton Rouge. Some of their die hards are way too far out there.
Sorry...I couldn't help it. I have to post something here. I graduated from ULL and then got my masters of University of Dallas. I am a huge LSU fan ever since I was a little kid. I attended ULL because they have a better computer science program. I must say I have never felt that I couldn't be an LSU fan and a ULL fan. That never occured to me. I am a ULL fan first because that is where I graduated from, but I still love LSU and love Saturday nights in Tiger stadium. I wish both schools would get over it! Root for the state of Louisiana! Louisiana needs all the help it can get.
Yeah, that's true. They like to complain about the Advertiser ("AdverTiger") for covering too much LSU stuff. If Kevin Faulk's write-up is slightly bigger than Delhomme's on any given week, they start cancelling subscriptions. LSU will always be #1 in the entire state. The die hard Cajun fans are hard to ignore. Since I've been living in TX the last few years, it's been a little easier to pull for the Cajuns. About a year ago, I was at Bank One (in Houston) and saw a guy with a "UL" hat on. College basketball season had just started and I realized it was a USL hat but felt like messing with him. I said, "Hey, UL, you guys are going to have a great team this year and surprise some people." He started to respond with, "Yeah, we have some young guys with talent but I feel good about this team." When I said something about how Pitino's teams are always dangerous in tournament time, his face completely changed from excitement to embarrassment. He started to explain how "UL" stood for University of Louisiana and I apologized (Oscar winning performance) and asked if they were a Division 1 school. I usually don't mess with people like that but I had been checking out one of their forums and all of the anti-LSU stuff was too much. The fact that the Cajuns are also red like Louisiville makes their "movement" struggle even more. I think they'd have more luck with "University of Louisiana Acadiana" (ULA) or something.
Its funny.. half of you guys say "I wont support ULL because they wont support LSU.." this is not true.. its actually a big controversy over here. Alot of people here complain that you cant go to ULL and support LSU.. they even have tshirts.. "if you dont support the cajuns, move to baton rouge".. personally, i am of the mind that we should support all louisiana teams. I support lsu first in all things, but i also root for ull, ulm, latech, tulane, nicholls, mcneese, northwestern, southern, etc... I think their are a few people at LSU that are just angry that ULL has quite a few academic programs that are better than LSU's and that they are improving enough to compete in a few sports. Its kinda hard when your entire athletic budget is smaller than the football budget at LSU... as for ULL competing with North Texas, ULL has the best offense in the sun belt.. coach bustle has a qb he can work with.. babb is a runner, and bustle coached M. Vick at Vtech.. their D sucks.. so its should be a shootout.. i was appealing to true football fans who would like to watch a good game.. guess those are limited around here..
I'll watch the game and pull for the Cajuns. Thanks for bringing the game to our attention. I moved to Lafayette when I was 4 and lived there until 17 when it was time for college and had to head east an hour for LSU. I've tried countless times to wipe the slate clean and genuinely pull for the Cajuns. Then I get the comparisons and anti-LSU sentiment from friends and I have to pick a side. I'll just say this, if you're an LSU fan living in Lafayette for a long enough period of time, you're going to develop some anti-USL feelings because of their fanbase. If you don't, you're either not that passionate about sports or have a much better tolerance for people than me. When I was 5 yrs old, the Athletic Director at USL (Terry Don Phillips) was one of my best friend's dad and had the position until we were 12 or so. I was already bleeding P&G during that time so I always felt like I had to defend LSU.
... Who was the coach that got fired when his son signed with LSU. Some time between '94 and '97. The Kid played TE or DE I believe.
U LA LA CAN BITE MY ASS !!!! They want to be something that they never will be. Little Miss Guvnah Blanco already managed to run off Emmert, how long before she runs off Saban ?
