This should be the real concern because someone is gonna eventually give this guy a HC shot, for better or worse. I know the coords are paid well now but hope that they aren't left out if/when the monetary rewards are passed out come end of the season... Later, Fur
Hey duder, what trophies exactly did Miles put in that case last year? And talk about irrelevant opponents. That defines LSU against Ark last year. The best talent in the conference, yes. Maybe the best coach and certainly a favorable schedule but like last year probably will wilt under pressure and be a non-factor in the conference race. This is the SEC not a bush league. Buckle those chin-straps and get ready. Don't be suprised if Miss St plays hard and makes the game interesting. And when LSU loses one, don't cry about bad breaks or the refs. Having the best talent, coachs and schedule leaves no excuses or sympathy. Just prove it on the field and try not to become irrelevant by Nov. 24th.
Personally, I've always felt that it to be cocky in nature for programs to fire coaches because they either couldn't win a NC (think Solich at Nebraska not long ago) or simply because you lost 5-straight to your rival, but have reached a BCS bowl in 2 or 3 of those last 5 years (like Carr is dealing with at Michigan). Making it to the BCS title game is more about luck, and at the least, about relying on outsiders' opinions (voting, etc.) than it is about how good of a team you actually have. Personally, I'm thrilled to have a coach keep getting us to the SEC title game year after year, or 3 out of 5, etc., and winning it 50% of the time than I am with a coach that wins the SEC and BCS title game in the same season, but drops off for 3-4 seasons. If Miles takes us back to Atlanta this year, making it 2-out-of-3 seasons he's able to accomplish this, then NO WAY to I want him fired. As cbssportsline's Dennis Dodd stated in an article written the other day, "Winning the SEC is the goal...winning the BCS is a bonus". Winning the conference is something that Miles and the players CAN control...Finishing the regular season in the top 2 in the BCS formula is something they can't. Just look at USC in '03. They took care of what they COULD control (winning the PAC-10), but even though they arguably had a National Champion-caliber team, they couldn't control the BCS formula that ranked Oklahoma ahead of them that year... IMO, winning the SEC is the goal every season. You do that, and are fortunate enough to finish the season with 1 loss or less, and THEN you have a shot at the National title. Lets say that LSU finishes 11-1 (which is probably the best odds considering that few SEC champions ever make it through the conference without one loss--and that's a testiment of the power of the conference) and say our 1 loss is to a ranked team in a well-played game but there are also 2 other programs that equal our loss total and both of their loses are to ranked opponents, but in the end, the BCS poll lists us as #3. Now, could you honestly say that Miles should be fired and base your opinion on the overly-used notion "because we have too much talent to not have won"?? ...I couldn't. Remember all those people that said, "How didn't we play for a national championship last season? We had too much talent!" ...well...most of that SAME "too much talent" was also on the team the year before when they went 9-3 and lost to Iowa in the Capital One bowl... You tell me the lodgic?
I think Bhelm illustrated that nicely. I think that between us and Florida, we caused you to miss a BCS bowl...again. And thanks for helping us to get to our own BCS bowl. I imagine you will help us again this year. You might inform your team of that fact since they seem incapable of winning a SEC title since they moved to this conference. We would expect nothing less. Considering how far your team will fall this year, you may want to look in the mirror on that one.
Or he'll have to be a long-tenured coach with a string of 9+ winning seasons. Phil Fulmer is considered by most to be in the upper echelon of SEC coaches and Mack Brown is considered to be the same in the Big XII, yet, for all their praise and respectibility, neither of them have particularly won conference titles as much as you would think. Mack Brown and Texas have had SOLID seasons for almost a decade, but what? just 2 Big XII titles and a NC in how many years? to show for it???
Wow...coming from an "irrelevant" supporter of an "irrelevant" program with an "irrelevant" coach, you sure do talk a lot of sh*t. :dis: How's the QB situation up in Arkansas?? Nutt has it squared away yet? ...or will he just decide that it's, you know, "irrelevant"??
I think there is an element of truth in both statements. Shows you how demanding fan bases can be. Fulmer sure looks like he is on a hot seat this season if he doesn't do well. And amazingly, I talk to many Texas fans that don't really give Brown much credit as a coach. Heck we all know that Nutt played in the SECCG last year and this will probably be his last year unless he miracles a 10 win season.
