They can talk all of the trash they want, just as long as they can back it up. I'll criticize someone in a heartbeat if I see them talking trash after one play and then get burnt on the next. We talked trash before and after just about every play in high school and that was over 13 years ago. Our young men are good people and they know when not to take something too far. We're not Clemson.
The greatest trash talker of all time was Larry Bird, if our players perform like him on the field and are gentlemen off I would be very happy. FT, if a guy post something and says"Saban would not have allowed that" or "It didn't happen under Saban", etc. are we supposed to just ignore it if it is not true? If someone says that Saban was the best coach LSU ever had, I'll agree. If Someone states that Saban built a great program at LSU, I'll agree. If someone says that Les Miles is unproven at LSU and Saban was, I'll agree. If someone says that the LSU defense was not as good as in the first two games of 2005 as they were under Saban in 2003, I'll agree. But when someone posts something that I believe to not be a fact or a valid opinion, I will disagree.
In the Sugar Bowl, Marquise Hill demolished Jason White, stood over him, made the OU sign with his arms, then made a neck-slashing motion. The ref took him aside and talked to him for a moment. We were lucky we weren't called then. I don't see anything appreciably different between now and then.
Here are some penalty statistics from the LSU web site. Draw your own conclusions. In twelve games in 2004 we had 72 penalties for 547 yards. That's an average of six per game at 46 yards per game. Here are the numbers for 2005. They are alarming and paint a picture that Stevie Wonder could interpret. Arizona St 11 penalties for 100 yards UT 14 penalties for 97 yards MSU 6 penalties for 50 yards Vandy 14 penalties for 133 yards It's basically the same athletes Saban coached last year. The numbers suggest to me a change in player attitude and approach to self discipline.
For the topic at hand I think you would need to be focusing only on perosnal foul & facemask type penalties. If you are looking to toss out numbers and statistics on penalties......
In my mind, the sharp increase in penalties are directly related to what I see as a decline in discipline and behavior on the field. YMMV
