Jags sting Hornets in 20-9 SWAC title match

    By The Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Quincy Richard threw two touchdowns and Southern took advantage of four Alabama State turnovers to defeat the Hornets 20-9 Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.

Richard was 17-of-28 for 157 yards and one interception for the Jaguars (12-1), who won their first SWAC title since 1999 despite being outgained 376-249.

Keldrick Williams gained 100 yards on 13 carries for Alabama State (8-5) but lost a costly fumble as the Hornets tried to rally from a 17-3 halftime deficit.

Alabama State's Desmond Foster returned the second-half kickoff 36 yards to the ASU 47, and the Hornets moved the ball to the Southern 31. But after gaining 10 yards on first down, Williams fumbled and the Jaguars' Lenny Williams recovered at the 17.

The Southern offense was forced to punt, and the Hornets began another long drive. But Tarvaris Jackson's pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-3 from the 7-yard line, wasting another opportunity.

The Southern offense, however, wasted few of its opportunities.

Trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, Alabama State went for it on fourth-and-5 from its own 49. But Jason Bothwell was dropped for a loss of 1, and a personal foul on the Hornets gave Southern the ball at the ASU 33. Richard hit Alfred Ard for a touchdown on the next play for a 10-0 lead.

Southern also struck quickly for its other touchdown. Eddie Woods intercepted a Jackson pass and returned it 24 yards to the ASU 11. Richard found Drayton Bridges on the next play, and the Jaguars led 17-0.

Ard finished with four catches for 66 yards.

Jackson was 13-of-31 for 167 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Nick Forston, who hit Reginald Glover for a 22-yard TD late in the fourth.

Southern is the black college national champion. Will Baton Rouge have two national champs?

When we win the national championship the media is going to have a field day with having two national champions in the same city.
