Is it just me, or does this fall seem like it's really heaving on kids getting hurt in camp?

LSU hasn't had many, but this is a big loss. Thankfully it's a position where we have quality depth. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

Mills is a big time player so it will be a big loss until he can return. That said, if we can afford an injury anywhere it is the secondary. Knock on wood, I've been pleasantly surprised at how few injuries we've had in camp this year. I'm actually a little encouraged that it is only 4-6 weeks. By the initial reports I was reading it sounded like he might be out for the year.

    Mills suffers injury at practice

LSU senior defensive back Jalen Mills suffered an injury during Wednesday’s practice that has now put a question mark on his availability for the 2015 season.

Mills suffered a serious ankle injury, as first reported by The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger. The news of a leg injury was also confirmed by the Geaux247 staff with multiple sources. It’s unclear of how long Mills could miss. The Times Picayune's Jim Kleinpeter reported that Mills fractured fibula, which would sideline him 4-6 weeks.

Mills entered his senior season with more starts than any other player on the LSU defense, earning the starting nod in all 39 games since he arrived in Baton Rouge. He’s considered one of the leaders of a talented Tigers defense, finishing his first three seasons with a combined 186 tackles and six interceptions.

Mills, who spent time at cornerback, nickel back and safety for LSU, is set to start alongside Jamal Adams at safety this season. If Mills misses extended time, Adams will likely be joined by Rickey Jefferson, a junior who was expected to rotate onto the field often this fall.

Its time for Ricky Jefferson to step on up. This is DBU, Mills is a huge loss but if there is any position group on this team in which "next man up" applies, its our secondary. I hope for a full and speedy recovery for this young man.

I posted in another thread about this, some might have missed......

I wanted to bring in a forgotten player, by most. Corey Thompson, some forget he was the 7th leading returning tackler last year. Played in 10 game and finished with 40 tackles, for the 2013 season. You can read about Mom and Dad, a lot like OBJ, Dad played ball, Mom ran track. A good friend of mine coached his dad Tony at A&M, his Dad was a talent. My friend also saw Corey play in high school, a major talent, much like his Dad. Corey is one of those guys that has speed and size, at 6'2" 221#'s. He is one that could come down in the box and change what the offense wants to do. A guy that could be moved around. Hope to see him make major steps this year. I'm sure after the red-shirt year, he's ready to get ingame action. Best of luck to him.

LSU safety Jalen Mills will miss first two games with ankle injury

    Ross Dellenger| [email protected]
    Aug. 19, 2015

LSU senior defensive back Jalen Mills suffered an ankle injury during LSU’s morning practice Wednesday and will miss the first two games of the season, his mother told The Advocate.

A source said Mills will miss “at least” the first game or two. The extent of the injury isn’t known, but Kisa Mills, Jalen’s mother, said her son won’t need surgery and classified the injury as a “sprain.”

“He will be OK,” Kisa Mills said in a message.

LSU opens with McNeese State on Sept. 5 and travels to Mississippi State the next week before hosting Auburn. School spokesman Michael Bonnette would only confirm that Mills suffered an ankle injury during morning drills.

Mills is one of the Tigers starting safeties and is the leader of the deepest and, likely, most talented position group for LSU. He turned down an opportunity to enter the NFL draft last season, returning to join what’s expected to be the Tigers’ strongest unit.

Mills, a DeSoto, Texas, native, has started all 39 games of his LSU career, moving from cornerback to safety as a sophomore in 2013. His immediate backup is Rickey Jefferson, a junior who replaced Mills at safety last season in LSU’s nickel and dime packages. Mills served as the Tigers’ nickel back in a five-defensive back set. Dwayne Thomas has also played nickel during preseason camp.

Either way, Jefferson’s role is likely to grow for at least the first few games of the year. Jefferson has impressed players during camp.

Linebacker Lamar Louis said Jefferson stuck out during the Tigers’ first camp scrimmage Saturday.

“Ricky comes down and lays the hat,” Louis said. “He’s going to be big for us at that safety position.”

LSU’s secondary may be the best of any position group. Jamal Adams, a preseason All-American, is set to start at the other safety spot. Tre’Davious White, a preseason All-SEC player, starts at cornerback. There is an on-going battle at the other cornerback spot between Thomas, freshman Kevin Toliver and sophomore Ed Paris.

Corey Thompson, a starter in 2013 who missed last season while recovering from a knee injury, could also factor into the mix.
