Since neither JaMarcus Russell nor Matt Flynn has taken a snap in a game so far we can all assume that Nick has decided to redshirt both of them. I hate to bring up the subject but if something were to happen to Mauck somebody would have to be the backup to Randall. Since Ricard, Clausen and Harrison are all gone is there any other QB on the roster besides Russell and Flynn? And who is listed 3rd on the depth chart now?
Just because they are planning to redshirt them doesn't mean they can't play later this year, if needed. Both are taking snaps in practice as the 3rd QB. The redshirt list isn't turned into the NCAA until after the season.
I don't think there are any other QBs on the roster. If Mauck goes down, it is still likely that neither of the freshmen would play unless there was a subsequent injury to Randall. Saban has repeatedly stated that he will not burn a red-shirt just to have the kid handoff the ball in the 4th quarter. At this point in time, assume both kids will red-shirt. As for the red-shirt rules, we covered those a week or two ago. The nickel version is that medical redshirts can be requested for players who have played less than 3 games and suffered a "season-ending" injury. The NCAA is granting a lot less of these nowadays, a 180 from a few years ago. In nearly all cases, the player to be red-shirted usually has not played a down all season.
