ProFootballTalk.com just reported that the Raiders would send cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to the Eagles in exchange for McNabb and cornerback Asante Samuel. The Internet site that deals with NFL news on all 32 teams cited an unidentified person who has provided tips that pan out on a regular basis.

Asomugha and McNabb are entering the final year of their contracts, though the Raiders have an option on Asomugha for 2011. Eagles coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that he is entertaining offers for McNabb, as well as his other quarterbacks, Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick. He later clarified his remarks by saying that he isn’t in the “market” for trading any of his quarterbacks but that he is “listening” to any and all offers.

Raiders coach Tom Cable has said more than once this offseason that the starting quarterback job will be “wide open” among JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski. All three started games last season.

McNabb, no doubt, would jump to the head of the class if he became a Raider. He also could serve as a mentor to Russell, something he has lacked during his three-year NFL career.

Of note, Cable said that Russell has taken a “huge step” just by taking part in the Raiders offseason workout program, that he is doing everything asked of him by the organization and that the starting quarterback job is “wide open.”

“He’s doing fine,” Cable said of Russell in a one-on-one interview with NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora. “The fact that he’s there working now with his teammates is really, really important. It gives him a chance now, when we start practice, to go in and compete for the job with the other quarterbacks. Just be very clear, he’s there, he’s working, and that’s a huge step for him. That will give him his chance.”

His chance? So that’s what it has come to for the player selected with the first pick of the 2007 NFL draft. He has a chance.

Naturally, the subject of Russell’s weight was a hot topic for reporters gathered around Cable on Tuesday morning. But Cable wasn’t biting on any questions that pertained to Russell’s weight.

San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami reported last week that Russell tipped the scales at 271 pounds when he reported to the offseason workouts in Alameda last Tuesday.

Cable said now is not the time to discuss Russell’s weight, instead keeping the focus on the fact Russell is working out with his teammates.

Cable did say that Russell holds the key to erasing the unyielding criticism that shadows him every step of the way during his odyssey from No. 1 draft pick to whatever lies ahead.

“It’s like anything in life, you can bring that on yourself,” Cable said. “If you want to not let that be who you are, then you need to do something about it. So you change.”

By all accounts, Russell has made a concerted effort to change his ways. He worked out at a training facility in Arizona earlier this offseason. He also is eating prepared meals and being monitored by former Raiders safety Eddie Anderson.

“The fact that he’s there working is really important right now,” Cable said. “That’s the biggest step right now, and that’s a big step.”

I would say Russell will supplant Ryan Leaf as the greatest NFL draft bust. At least Leaf tried, he just sucked. Russell has not even tried to succeed in the NFL. And he almost sucks as much as Leaf.

A 46 yard TD pass to Brandon Lafell in the Sugar Bowl off his back foot vs a horrible Notre Dame defense got him the #1 overall pick by an easily excitable Al Davis. Too bad for Oakland fans.

Remember, Russell already has been paid most of the money guaranteed in his rookie deal. If Al cuts him before this season, he will owe Russell only $3 million more — and won't have to pay the $6.45 million otherwise due Russell.

If the Raiders acquire McNabb, or any other high-profile QB, I think Russell would have to be willing to accept a major pay cut, or be released.

And Russell has said he wouldn't accept a pay cut.

Could this be Russell's passive-aggressive way of inducing Davis to let him escape from Raiders Island?

McNabb: The Raiders would be a terrible place for an aging, banged-up potential future Hall of Fame QB to end up, and McNabb knows it.

He would help the Raiders, no doubt; he would also be one bad hit away from retirement, while playing behind a woeful offensive line.

But the Raiders might be the only team willing to risk trading a good draft pick to the Eagles without agreeing to a long-term extension with McNabb, who is scheduled to make $11.2 million in his final contracted year.

That's how Al landed Richard Seymour last year — he likes to collect elite players, and if that means he has to go year-by-year with the contracts, that's fine.

So it's up to the Eagles: If the Raiders offer the most, do the Eagles send the face of their franchise to NFL purgatory, anyway?

St. Louis holds the pick, needs a QB and has been hinting Bradford for a few weeks. But recent trade rumors (with Washington) make sense to me. Can Bradford's shoulder hold up playing eight games a year on the Rams' hard plastic turf?

I wouldn't want to invest $40 million, or more, in a QB with that kind of question mark. Ask Al Davis, who might be about to write off his own glaring error.

Campbell indicated that he was told that he would be the starter.
I listened to the NFL Network Draft casters and they each indicated they thoughT JR would have to take the league minimum to stay in the NFL. They all felt that he has no passion for the game.
NBC had a story indicating the Raiders would drop him next week.
