I don't think it was a matter of May not being informed. I think he knows his name, it may have been a dyslexia moment while reading the teleprompter.
May is actually one of the better ones. He's intelligent and is usually knows what he's talking about. Not to mention he's pretty objective, unlike his 99 year old counterpart.
