I wish people would quit saying that Matt Mauck was mistake-free. He was far from it. Interceptions & fumbles happened quite a few times under his watch & because of his mistakes - even during our national championship season. I also wish that people would quit saying that Flynn can read defenses better. He hasn't shown anything on the college football field to show that. The thing that Mauck had was LEADERSHIP. And that's what we will need out of whomever of these 3 great QB's we have under center. All three of our quarterbacks have the potential to be better than Mauck, but we'll need atleast one to step up & take control of this team to become it's leader.
I completely agree....LEADERSHIP is a key ingredient for a good QB. Let's go back to Booty vs. Rohan....the team responded so much better to Rohan because he was the better leader, although he may not have had all the mechanics. He proved to us all how far his leadeship could take us the next season when he lead the team to a Sugar Bowl victory over Illinois. With that said, if the QB race is as close as they say, then its going to come down to whomever the team responds to best and accepts as their leader.
Comparatively he was especially against one Heisman Trophy winner. Point is...he didn't make forced errors. A sack because of a blown offensive assignment or a tipped ball can't really be attributed to any fault of his. He very rarely caused a turnover thru bad decision.
I seem to recall us almost losing to Ole Miss because of his mistakes! With that being said, he was very consistent, and as said earlier, the team wanted to play for him... Something all QBs must have to be good.
It's called being human..... NS's strategy worked. 2 SEC titles and a nat champ.... We can pick apart Stoops, Carroll, Bowden, SOS and several other coaches if we really want to. Saban is a defensive minded coach. It worked for us, on a few occasions it didn't....(very few) He's still one of the top 10 coaches in all of football, imo.
He fumbled on the goal line more than once I believe & threw interceptions that weren't receivers fault. Some people around here act like he was the perfect QB and say that he is what we need, not some hot shot athlete. All I'm saying is, a QB like Russell or Perrilloux is just, if not more, capable of leading a national championship caliber team.
Never said perfect...Talentwise he was an also ran. Everyone has a bad throw here and a fumble there. He was no worse or better in that catagory than anyone else. He just didn't make mental errors that often. If you take Russel or Flynn...I'm not sold on Perrilloux, he hasn't play a down in college, they are much more talented than Mauck will ever be. The key is whether they can match that talent with leadership and smarts on the field.
