The idea of winning is no longer the novelty it once was around the Prairie View A&M women’s basketball program.
The Panthers, the one-time SWAC doormats, have turned the tables in the league. A program that never had won a SWAC title prior to Cynthia Cooper-Dyke stepping on campus four years ago recently locked up its third straight regular-season championship.

But even as PV (19-10, 16-1 SWAC) racks up 20-point-plus victories over its SWAC foes en route to its 15-game winning streak, Cooper-Dyke sees reasons for concern. She was perturbed following the Panthers’ lackadaisical 72-44 home win over Alcorn on Thursday. Cooper-Dyke stomped and shouted even as her team went up 62-41.

“What I’m trying to do is not play for the moment, but play for the future,” said Cooper-Dyke, whose team has locked up the No. 1 seed in next week’s SWAC tournament. “So we have to get better at certain things for when we are playing in a game that actually counts.

“That’s why I stay on them, it’s not about this game because we’re already up by 30 points and it’s clear we are going to win this game. But we have to coach so that we fix certain mistakes and certain fundamentals for the next game.”
