Well, on any football team, I think it could be argued that the linemen are the core of the team. To lose a great DT like Barksdale would have hurt a lot worse than to lose someone like McKnight, who may be great but whose position can be filled by someone a little less agile or a little less quick. Not to say that McKnight may not be the next Bush, but until then he's just a recruit with great numbers.

However, when stats matter and positions are limited- like in fantasy- you need a very consistent AND high numbers back. Hard to come by both. Different scenario. Again, professional football is not limited by just number of players but by the actual salaries paid out. Someone like LT takes away from other positions, but in the NFL when everything is so fast you need to have players who can open things up to clear different aspects of your offense. In college, its a manipulation of a recruit's psyche, and it's also much easier to win any given Saturday as there are some 80+ more teams in I-A than in the NFL. Higher distribution of talent, etc.

    BOX my statement BOX

See, I don't always just post crap. Well, I don't always post off-topic crap.

I understand and am glad to hear someone give the linemen credit- that's a rarity. I used to jokingly say that I coulda run through the holes that Emmitt S's OLine opened.......I did say jokingly. Speed kills dude.

I think Keiland will be a better back than McKnight. The dude has AMAZING speed for his size!!! He's going to shine a lot more now with the lesser emphasis on our passing game.

I don't think that LSU people are mad that McKnight signed with USC. Far from it. We've lost big time recruits in the past and it's all a part of college football.

The problem that most of us have with McKnight is his and J.T. Curtis using LSU for Curtis' dog-and-pony circus show. McKnight later admitted (as many of us knew) that he was going to USC all along. But, if he rules out LSU, then his dog-and-pony show in the Curtis gym doesn't quite attract the attention that it got.

He and J.T. Curtis used LSU. And, for that, I think Joe McKnight now realizes that he'll never be welcome back in the state again.

He should have just made his choice when he knew. Sure, people would have been upset, but, much like a another former Parade Magazine Player of the Year in Travis Minor, everything would have been forgotten.

ETA: When Minor and Warrick Dunn went to Florida State, I used to follow them and root for them. Even after they turned pro, I'd keep an eye on where they were and how they were doing and wished them the best.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who hopes that McKnight follows the same path as most of his fellow John Curtis alums and falls flat on his face and rarely ever sees the field. I hope he's a total flop and doesn't even smell the NFL. Maybe then, he'll regret the Curtis dog-and-pony show that he helped orchestrate.

Minor and Dunn were class acts when it came to recruiting. Everyone at my HS knew they were FSU bound by their Sophmore years but they never stringed anybody along about it. Couldnt really blame them for wanting to go to a better football program back in those days. I tried numerous times to get Dunn to pick LSU when playing NCAA football but my wish never came true.

With everything that was going on with Dunn at the time (i.e., his mother being killed and having to look after his siblings), I think many of us expected him to go. And, as I recall, Kevin Franklin seemed to be the "bigger" recruit.

With Minor, I know we wanted him bad. And, it was hard to lose the Parage Magazine Player of the Year. But, I remember he seemed to let everyone know early on. And, given the fact that Dunn had just finished up at FSU, you kind of expected it. And, at the time, FSU was at the top of the heap and LSU was just trying to get back to respectability under Dinardo.

ETA: My bad - Minor was the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year, and the Gatorade Player of the Year. He was the No. 1 RB for Parade, but not the Parade Player of the Year. LaVar Arrington was the Parade Player of the Year in 1997.
