dan patrick mentioned on his radio show that the raiders have sent a lowball offer to brady quinn to see if they could sign him. they are thinking that they may have trouble signing JR and want a backup plan. patrick said quinn's agent tom condon is not a guy who will accept a lowball offer. but who knows, just another ripple in an ocean of rumors.
If you chose a QB first, with all that money and how much cap space that takes, a team really cannot slowly groom the QB. He might not start the first game in his first year, but he will end up starting later on that season even if he's not ready yet. Its unfair to the rest of the team because you're throwing a rookie QB out there and basically writing off the season. And, its not unfair to the rookie QB, as we've seen a number of promising QBs who were pushed too early and never lived up to their promise. When the Vikings selected Culpepper, he was the elenth pick and so they had more room to groom him. His first season, he didn't really play that much and I don't think he started a game.
what they said on the radio is that it would hurt tom condon in his recruiting next year b/c other agents can point to this deal as a bad move and not getting the most money possible. on the other hand you have quinn, who might make less, if he falls. i don't see him slipping past the vikings but then again i didn't see leinart dropping as much as he did last year either (that was awesome btw)
A lowball offer for the first pick would still probably be more money than somebody would get for getting picked third or something. I heard that played a factor last year, when the Texans chose Mario Williams. BQ is actually a better fit for the Raiders if they're serious about using a West Coast offense, whereas JR is a better fit if the Raiders want to stick to their traditional, long ball approach to offense. Lane Kiffin will want to install a west coast offense, but who knows how much control Al Davis has really given him.
