Meier will be a necessity come the postseason. He has started in Omaha. BATON ROUGE -- Fifth-ranked LSU (11-3) continues a seven-game homestand Tuesday as the Tigers play host to top-ranked Tulane (13-1) at 6:30 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. The LSU-Tulane game can be heard on the LSU Sports Network (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and on the Internet at www.LSUsports.net. The game will be televised live by Cox Sports Television (Cable Ch. 37 in Baton Rouge). The LSU-Tulane contest marks the Tigers? first game against a ranked team this season. LSU last faced a top-ranked team nine months ago in its opening game of the College World Series (June 19), when the Tigers dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 1 Miami (Fla.). Junior right-handed pitcher Justin Meier (0-0, 4.05 ERA) will make his first start of the season for LSU on Tuesday. Meier last started a game on June 4, 2004, when he blanked Army, 9-0, in the opening game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. Tulane coach Rick Jones is expected to counter with sophomore right-hander Brandon Gomes (1-0, 3.12 ERA). LSU has won six of the last nine meetings between the clubs, including two wins in three games last season. LSU has also won three of the last four meetings in Alex Box Stadium, though Tulane posted a 1-0 victory last season in Baton Rouge. http://www.lsusports.net/index.cfm?md=newsroom&tmp=detail&articleid=8149&category=BB
Re: Junior Justin Meier (0-0, 4.05 ERA) makes his first start against Weenies tomorro I like Meier. I just hope we can get some run support for him. We need to come out and play solid defense and jump out early that way we can hold those weenies. I don't know much about Gomes yet this season though. Anyone have a scouting report or some info on him? I remember him being pretty solid a couple of years ago.
From ESPN older article: Sophomore right-hander Brandon Gomes moves into Tulane's weekend rotation, replacing J.R. Crowell on Sunday. Gomes hasn't allowed an earned run in nine innings (one start, one relief appearance) while posting a 12-2 strikeout-walk ratio in his return from Tommy John surgery. 2005: Gomes - 3.12 ERA, 17.1 Innings, 16 Hits, 6 Runs all earned, 2 walks, 17 SOs, 3 doubles and 1 HR given up, faced 66 batters, who are batting .242 against him. 2004: Gomes - 3.38 ERA, 2.2 Innings, 1 Hit, 1 Run earned, 1 walks, 4 SOs, gave up 1 single, faced 8 batters, batting .125 against him. not much info on this guy, but he looks pretty solid. But he is still young and inexperienced. Brandon Gomes RHP/6'1/175 Fall River HS Fall River, MA Gomes is another not so big right-hander. He shows a high 80s to 90s mph arm and one of the smoothest deliveries you'll see. He has a MLB average breaking ball that should get better with his excellent quick arm action. Re: Junior Justin Meier (0-0, 4.05 ERA) makes his first start against Weenies tomorro Is Gomes a weekend starter for the weenies?
He's in the mix for the Pond Scum. They are still working on a third weekend starter. Bogusevic and Owings are their big arms, Crowel has a few more innings under his belt than Gomes, but his ERA is pushing double-digits. The algae feel this week will propel them to Omaha, LSU and CSU-Fullerton (or is it Disneyland?).
Re: Junior Justin Meier (0-0, 4.05 ERA) makes his first start against Weenies tomorro I was "perusing" the scum's stat sheet yesterday and I saw 5 or 6 pitchers who have made an appearance, some with 5-7 innings and all have a 0.00 ERA. pretty impressive. you just dont see that in baseball even though its very early.
