In 2007 Steele didn't like the time he spent on the road, despite his small territory, and Saban allowed him just to recruit an area that was roughly 100-150 miles away from campus in 2008. By no means is he considered a "full on recruiter."
His territory has never been the Gulf Coast area while he's been in Tuscaloosa. In his current position, he's been responsible for the state of Tennessee and occasionally drifting a little more north. The "great" Jeremy Pruitt (FSU and now UGA fame) didn't have the "balls" to handle the Gulf Coast and was reassigned to a different section of the Mobile area. To suggest, or even think, Steele as a premium recruiter in that area isn't the case.
When it comes to recruiting he does do well in a few areas. He's pretty good on OV's when it's his responsibility to break down the X's and O's of where a player can fit in the scheme. He does do well at evaluating film. Around the athletic department he was known as a "great computer recruiting analyst."
On a different note: Are we back to citing HC'ing records as definitive statistics on how well a guy will do as a position coach, or as a coordinator? Cam's record in Miami isn't indicative of what he brings to the offensive coordinator position according to most here.
And, just to be clear, Briles won with Steele's recruits, right?!?
