Its also surprising to me that this was not an issue when Clinton and
    Gore ran for office.

    Where was Clinton during Vietnam?
    Where was Al Gore?
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did Al Gore serve in Vietnam? Yes, he did. He spent five months there as a reporter/journalist.

"Mr. Gore enlisted in the Army on Aug. 7, 1969, reporting to Fort Dix, N.J. He was based at Fort Rucker, Ala., working as an information specialist. For a reason neither he nor the military can explain, Mr. Gore would remain at Fort Rucker for a lengthy period awaiting orders." "When they finally came, he would spend less than five months in Vietnam, arriving on Jan. 8, 1971, to write newspaper and magazine articles. He was discharged on May 24, 1971." (The Washington Times National Weekly Edition Nov. 28 - Dec. 4, 1994)

A five month stay in Vietnam is less than half the normal tour. Gore asked for and received an "early out" that May at a time when the 20th Engineers were standing down as part of a gradual U.S. troop reduction. (Washington Post. 12/31/99 pg. A1)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Al is a war hero huh?

    Gimme a break!

There were also two Texas politicos, now deceased, who said that Bush got preferential treatment to move ahead of more qualified candidates to get into the Texas Air National Guard.

Two more reasons why Bush's Vietnam era hypocrisy is fair game is the way the right wing jumped on Clinton's avoidance of service in the Vietnam War, the scandalous attacks on Al Gore, who actually went to Vietnam, although as a combat reporter, and the disgraceful attacks on Max Cleland in Georgia.

Cleland lost three limbs in Vietnam, but was pictured beside Osama Bin Laden in attack campaign ads that implied he was doing Al Qaida's bidding. The guy who took Cleland's seat, a piece of waste called Saxbe Chambliss, avoided Vietnam service.

After that, I hope Democrats realize that anything goes, since it is clear that Republicans feel that way. Democrats should realize that the Republicans consider Democrats disloyal Americans, and they should therefore consider campaigns the moral equivalent of war.

Republicans have taken this view for some time. It is time that Democrats did also.

Before you posted this, I only THOUGHT you were a sick, twisted individual. Now I KNOW it.

What do YOU know of war? Have you ever served your
country in uniform? I have, and I can tell you...politics is just that -politics.

And since you insist on making it a party thing, bear in mind that
it was a DEMOCRAT in the White House when this country was dragged into World War II and Korea, and a DEMOCRAT who embroiled us in Vietnam.

Just how stupid are you? World War II was a "Democratic" War, a political war the FDR "dragged" this country into? This is what I am talking about folks. These right wingers are so ignorant they are worthless to talk to.

Korea was a "political" war? You are an idiot G-man.

As for Vietnam, BOTH parties, along with the overwhelming majority of the country FAVORED going into it at the beginning. LBJ feared greatly that the right wing would beat him bloody politically if he "lost" South Vietnam to the Communists.

The political right wing--that means YOUR KIND G-man--was greatly united in support of Vietnam in 1965.

There was much more support for the Vietnam War at the beginning than there was for Bush's Iraq War even after Bush's lies. It includes LBJ's lies on the Gulf of Tonkin incident also, but even besides that, the country was much more united at the beginning of Vietnam than it was a year ago.

(It is something that is often overlooked about Vietnam that at the beginning the polls showed strong support for going into it.)

Because of this stupidity from you, you are going on my "ignore list." If you can't post something that is even slightly rooted in fact, you are uttermenschen to me.

Max Cleeland lost three limbs in a non-combat accident involving a grenade. This accident could have happened on any military base or even while serving in the National Guard in Texas. This is not to cheapen the fact that Max Cleeland honorably served his country, but the Democratic claims that he left three limbs on the battlefields of Vietnam is false.

Look, the Democrats largely despise the military and all it stands for. As a former vet, I am quite disturbed by the sudden use of the military and those valiantly giving their lives as a political tool for the very people who spat upon them 30 years ago. Have they no shame.

These are examples of how Cotton Bowl'66 "intelligently"refutes arguments.

Don't waste your time posting to this hobgoblin.

The Democrats do not largely despise the military and the people criticizing Bush's cowardice not are not people who spat on soldiers thirty years ago. You are a liar, but since you are a right winger, it goes without saying that you are nothing but a liar.

Normally I just ignore you as not worth responding to, but since I have explained my position elsewhere in detail on this, I will just say try reading what I post from now on and you won't have to ask that.

Bush is a worthless, lying, cowardly hypocrite who dodged Vietnam and now wants to play dress up as a real fighting man.

Bush is not worth what I scrape off my boots after a moonless stroll through a cow pasture.

Well, why would you want to moon a cow anyway?
