That's a rare animal indeed. I have always heard they existed but never saw one up close. I think it's just a mirage. I didn't even know it was possible to be a Dallas fan and an LSU fan.

Actually, they don't. The song in question is the long version of Tiger Rag. The short version, with the fast "hold that tiger" is referred to by the band as "Presto" because of the tempo marking.

Before the 1987 State game, touchdowns resulted in the band playing "Presto", waiting for the extra point to play the tag note, then played the entire Tiger Rag, waiting for the kick receiver to catch the ball for the tag note.

Due to the cheer, and the letter to the Advocate from an Ole Miss fan accusing the band of playing dirty songs, the band started playing "Fight for LSU" after the extra point. (The tag note doesn't really belong on "Fight", but was added due to the tradition from Tiger Rag.)

And yes, students came up to us at the game and asked "why don't you play the a****** song".

Tiger Rag was banned from Tiger Stadium for at least 10 years, but somehow the student section remembered the old cheer and got it taken out of Pregame as well.

I am upset that the drums and tag note are no longer. Another tradition dies at the hands of the self-absorbed, self-righteous, santimonious student section. Thanks.

Chris Warner is a writer. A New Iberia, Louisiana native, he lives with his wife and daughters in Fairhope, Alabama. To contact Chris, or to discover the many books he’s penned, visit his website: www.tailgatersguide.netHis take on the student section “problem” (according to some posters)“The student section has been recently criticized for some of its unison chants during home games. Its detractors claim that they show no class by using four-letter expletives and by personally attacking opposing players, like they did against Tim Tebow on Saturday. Tebow actually got it good from the LSU students before the game even started. Apparently Tim Tebow posted his cell phone number on the internet and the LSU student body through the amazing power of the internet, got it too. Tebow was shocked when he reportedly received dozens of intrusive, spicy messages from Tiger undergrads. Tebow’s reply to the untimely texts was fittingly, “Don’t tase me, bro!” “While I had to show my wife what a Teabag is—thank God for the internet—I don’t find fault with the student section’s overzealous nature. I think they are just young and jazzed about being young and jazzed. I wish I could go back and do it again, and in the spirit of good fun, I think that outside of a physical melee’ with opposing fans, I think anything in terms of chanting is fair game because I think it has a powerful psychological impact on the opponent, making Death Valley all the more intimidating.”“For these students, these are their good ole’ days, and they own that piece of corner real estate in Tiger Stadium. Mix alcohol with moxie and the omnipotence of youth, and you might get anything. But you can’t stop it. The last time I checked, this was still America where you are free to express yourself.”

Why do I care what he thinks? He is just one more opinion to throw into the pile. Also he is wrong about freedom of expression. There are specific laws that I posted that you could be charged with for screaming "F***" out loud. Again I am not saying that it should be enforced but if the immature student section can't get it through their thick heads that they cannot just do whatever they want it will only end badly for them. That's just the way it is. The adminisatration of LSU will act based on the majority of fans complaints. He is delusional if he thinks that the students "own" that portion of the stadium. Let it keep going on and I fear the students will see a little snippet of the real world that they do not currently live in.

BTW: I'll say it yet again. The student section is awesome as far as intensity goes but the vulgar language needs to stop. Use some intelligence and come up with something more original.
